Principal Maxillofacial Prosthetist / Reconstructive Scientist

An opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced Maxillofacial Prosthetist to join our team. This senior role involves working both independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary clinical teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centred prosthetic and technical services across a broad range of complex cases. The successful candidate will provide expert clinical, technical, advisory, and scientific support to both patients and surgical colleagues across multiple hospital sites, including the opportunity to manage their own clinics and work directly with patients to deliver compassionate, individualised care.
The department has a well-established CAD/CAM service, supporting orthognathic and head and neck surgical planning, and guided surgery. We are seeking a candidate with relevant experience in these areas who can contribute to the ongoing development and expansion of these services, taking a proactive role in innovation and service improvement.
The department is well positioned for further development, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to, and initiate, departmental research programmes. This includes advancing digital and CAD/CAM capabilities, ensuring they are fully integrated into clinical practice and continue to evolve in line with service needs. Throughout all aspects of the role, a strong commitment to delivering safe, effective, patient-focused care tailored to individual needs and experiences is essential.
Main duties of the job
To deliver an advanced clinical and technical Maxillofacial Prosthetic service to the appropriate clinical teams, and patients undergoing reconstructive procedures or rehabilitation using implants, guides, splints and prostheses
To support and contribute to tasks which support the departments Quality Management System
To support and contribute to tasks which support the departments COSHH
To participate in stock control and ordering of departmental consumables
To participate in teaching for the departments training programme
To support and deputise for the Consultant Maxillofacial Prosthetist as required

Reports to: Consultant Maxillofacial Prosthetist / Maxillofacial Laboratory Manager
Job Summary:
To deliver expert clinical, technical, advisory and scientific services to patients undergoing reconstructive procedures or rehabilitation using implants, splints and prostheses
To support clinical and surgical colleagues across multiple specialities, by delivering expert clinical, technical, advisory and scientific services within the scope of maxillofacial prosthetics / reconstructive science
To contribute to, and initiate own, departmental research and development programmes
To support and contribute to tasks which support the departments Quality Management System
To support and contribute to tasks which support the departments COSHH
To participate in stock control and ordering of departmental consumables
To participate in teaching for the departments training programme

Person Specification
Experience
* 1 year minimum post-qualification experience as a Maxillofacial Prosthetist / Reconstructive Scientist in a hospital setting (oral and maxillofacial surgery) including organising of own clinic and attendance in theatre and MDT
* Highly developed specialist knowledge across full range of work procedures including incorporating CAD/CAM into the workflow
* Experience of invasive extra-oral, intra-ocular and intra-oral clinical procedures and operating theatre practices
* Experience in a dental and/or orthodontic appliance production environment, in a hospital or commercial setting
* 4 year's post-qualification experience as Maxillofacial Prosthetist / Reconstructive Scientist
* Presentation at relevant professional conferences
* Experience in teaching, mentoring and/or managing junior team members
Skills and Knowledge
* Relevant maxillofacial laboratory best practice including knowledge around MDR legislation and compliance with ISO13485
* Leadership skills, able to prioritise and make decisions
* Accommodate emergency work
* COSHH, health and safety legislation
* Patient confidentiality and data protection legislation
* Spatial awareness in three dimensions and familiarity of anatomical shape, dimension, position, colour, shade and hue
* High degree of precision and concentration in the manufacturing of appliances and prostheses
* Knowledge of relevant material science, use of biocompatible materials, chemistry and toxicology applicable to the scope of Maxillofacial Prosthetics/Reconstructive Science
Qualifications
* MSc in Reconstructive Science including certificate of competence, or MSc in Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation, or University Professional Diploma in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Technology with additional 2 year vocational training period
* Full membership of the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists (IMPT)
* BSc in Dental Technology or equivalent
* GDC registered as Dental Technician
* Relevant qualification/course attendance in Health Service line management and/or leadership
* Certificate in semi-permanent or permanent medical tattooing
