About the role
Zohan is a lovely six year old boy who lives with his parents and sibling in the Arthur’s Hill area of Newcastle. He has a diagnosis of DWM (Dandy Walker Malformation) with symptoms including hydrocephalus, Global Developmental Learning Difficulties and Autism. He is Non-Verbal and communicates using hand gestures and body language; he can say a few words. He is a wheelchair user and wears glasses permanently. He has shunts fitted, is PEG fed and has issues with reflux which can result in sickness if not managed correctly.
Despite his diagnosis Zohan is generally happy and enjoys the outdoors. When unwell or not so happy he may become agitated and indicate frustration and pain by hitting himself. He uses a head guard to avoid head injuries. He loves textures and sensory stimulation toys, especially sensory lights.
Role purpose
Zohan would like to employ a personal assistant to assist him in accessing his community and enjoy activities. He loves swimming, soft play venues, and visits to the Tim Lamb Centre/Alan Shearer Centre. He is looking for someone who enjoys the outdoors in fine weather and you must be fit enough to manage and manoeuvre his wheelchair, safely.
Responsibilities
* Personal care, assistance with dressing/undressing
* Assistance with feeding which will require you to be trained in PEG feeding and maintenance of tubes
* Showering Zohan if necessary
* Promoting his independence to explore all his listed activities that he would like to experience
* Assist with accessing community facilities and activities
* Assist with general mobility and safe wheelchair management
Requirements
* Experienced personal assistant who can demonstrate their skills
* Car driver with full UK Licence and business insurance
* Full UK work permission at start date
* Ability to work term time and school holidays as described
