About this career opportunity...

In this role as a Contaminated Land Consultant, you’ll be working closely with other Arup teams (e.g. other environmental specialists, planners, geotechnical and building engineers and infrastructure civil engineers) to deliver integrated multi-disciplinary consultancy services to a wide range of different clients. There will be opportunities to promote other environmental teams, such as EIA, air quality, archaeology and ecology, through which you can develop broader environmental knowledge. The main aspect of the role will be working on a wide variety of projects (in terms of scale, value, location and sector) assessing the contaminative status and formulating cost-effective and pragmatic remediation solutions, liaising with regulators and satisfying planning requirements. In this role, you’ll be largely office based, with some site work, for example, to supervise ground investigations and remediation projects. From time-to-time site work may be more intensive. There may be opportunities to work on short-term projects around the UK and even internationally.

Job tasks will include:

• Working under the direction of senior staff and disclosing work with graduates and other junior staff, Undertaking contamination desk studies and site inspections/ audits.

• Designing and supervising [contamination] ground investigations/ contractors, including site work, scheduling chemical testing and checking factual investigation reports and invoices (note that Arup does not undertake the site work, we design and supervise in conjunction with geotechnical colleagues).

• Assessing and managing data, particularly using GIS, OpenGround, Excel, risk assessment software and other tools such as 3D modelling in Leapfrog, Preparation of contamination assessment reports, risk assessments, remediation strategies and verification reports. Assistingsenior staff during due diligence work. Preparing ground conditions/contamination chapters in environmental statements. Attend internal Arup and external client meetings and external stakeholder liaison. Assisting the teams research work, presentations and input into tenders.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people with:

* Degree qualified in environmental science, chemistry, contaminated land, geological or hydrogeological or other related field, along with a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject.
* Working towards full membership of a relevant institution (CIWEM, IEMA, IES, Geological Society, RSC or equivalent) and considering chartership in the future.
* Previous contaminated land knowledge gained within a consulting environment.
* Some exposure of soil and waste management, waste classification, DQRA, hydrogeological assessment, due diligence and environmental permitting would be of benefit.
