About the Role
This Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse is to manage the department and co-ordinate the delivery of skilled, effective care and timely discharge. Ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors. Deliver expert nursing care, leading the team by example. Provide advice and supervision to junior staff. Actively participate in the development of the Paediatric Emergency Department service by using innovation and evidence-based practice. Provide support to the Band 7 Sisters and assist with managing the teams.
Main duties
CLINICAL
* Manage the department environment, and be responsible for ensuring co-ordination and delivery of skilled, effective care and safe, timely discharge.
* Assess, prioritise, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care. Supervise others in the aforementioned functions.
* Ensure safe, timely discharge or transfer of patients to wards, other hospitals or care settings.
* Perform and ensure others perform patient observations such as blood pressure, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturations, early warning scores, pain scores, temperature, and ECGs.
* Provide follow up advice, treatment and care.
* Perform procedures such as wound care, suturing, local anaesthetics, incision and drainage of small abscesses, nail removal, urinary catheterisations, venepuncture, and IV cannulation.
* Complete investigations such as blood glucose measurement, urine tests, blood gas analysis, pregnancy testing.
* Refer patients to other speciality doctors for opinions (e.g., orthopaedic, surgical, mental health, plastics).
* Use current Emergency Department Patient Group Directions (Mid Yorkshire) to supply and administer medicines without reference to a doctor.
* Recognise and advise on Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult Protection issues, following relevant policies and notifying appropriate professionals and parents/carers.
* Nurse Leader/participant for the Major Trauma Team; initiate and participate in Advanced Life Support and cardiac arrest management.
* Maintain clear, accurate documentation in patient notes; remind team members to do likewise.
* Assess patients (triage), request x-rays, and administer analgesia as needed using Patient Group Directions. Refer patients to other health care professionals as appropriate.
* Act on results of investigations and x-rays requested by self.
* Administer IV, IM, SUBCUT injections, rectal and oral medications.
* Apply bandages, casts and splints.
* Provide direct patient care and attend to hygiene needs; assist with bedpans/urinals and washing patients as required.
* Provide direction, support and advice to junior staff.
* Maintain personal accountability for safe clinical practice and comply with the NMC Code of Practice and guidelines.
* Act as the patient advocate when necessary.
* Attend the department and assume nurse leadership in the event of a major incident when the Matron/Senior Sister are absent.
* Implement and maintain infection control procedures and ensure compliance by others.
* Move patients on trolleys to other areas as required (e.g., x-ray, resuscitation room).
Qualifications
* Current NMC Registration
* Evidence of Continual Professional Development
* University Accredited Nurse
* Post Registration Qualification in ED Nursing/Critical Care Nursing or equivalent
* Post Registration Qualification in Mentorship/Training
Experience
* Sufficient or significant proven experience in Accident and Emergency/critical care
* Experience in A&E
* Evidence of participating in the development of patient care
