Overview
Consultant Microbiologist or Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. We are looking for a Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Disease to share the provision of day-to-day clinical microbiology and infectious disease services between Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust (QEHKL) and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUHFT). Although employed by NNUHFT, the post holder is expected to spend time at QEHKL working with other consultants to provide a comprehensive microbiology service for QEHKL, including cross-cover for infection prevention and control. A service level agreement exists to support this working pattern and job planning will be arranged jointly between the two organisations.
Responsibilities
* Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive microbiology service for all users of the laboratory.
* Rotate with colleagues to provide either Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) doctor role or Antibiotic Stewardship role, by mutual agreement.
* Provide consultation and advisory services to medical colleagues in other specialties at QEHKL, and to GPs and other healthcare professionals in Primary Care.
* Participate in out-of-hours on-call service, including advisory services to James Paget University Hospital and NNUH, in addition to primary care.
* Liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities at NNUH and QEHKL.
* Take part in the Royal College of Pathologists continuing medical education programme; the Trust will provide study leave expenses in line with national terms and conditions of service.
About the EPA Department and Scope
The EPA Department of Microbiology is a large and busy department expanding to meet increasing microbiological needs within the NHS. It provides a county-wide diagnostic microbiology service as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) and has a comprehensive infection service including diagnostic and clinical microbiology, infection prevention and control, health protection and health promotion. It holds full UKAS accreditation in Microbiology and Virology. As of 2013, it integrated laboratory workloads from James Paget Hospital and QEHKL into a single microbiology laboratory at NNUHFT.
The EPA Medical Microbiology Department encourages collaboration with Quadram Institute; there is no dedicated research post available in this role, but applicants with research interests are welcome to discuss opportunities.
The department moved into newly refurbished laboratories at Norwich Research Park, Colney, in 2010, near the main hospital site, the University of East Anglia and the Quadram Institute.
