Legal & Risk Services is a division of the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership, based in Cardiff, which provides a litigation and comprehensive legal advisory service to the NHS. The above position provides a unique opportunity to develop your skills in an informal but challenging environment.

We are seeking to recruit a paralegal to assist the General Medical Practice Indemnity team (GMPI team) in the day-to-day management of the clinical negligence claims against the NHS in Wales.The GMPI team manages clinical negligence claims against those engaged in the delivery of primary care services on behalf of Local Health Boards and

NHS Trusts in Wales, including GPs.

Working closely with Solicitors and Legal Executives there may also be the opportunity of gaining experience within the following areas of law:

* Inquests
* Commercial law
* General advice on health related issues

We are looking for someone who has an interest in clinical negligence litigation and who has experience of working within a team environment.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work under the close supervision of a lawyer and will undertake a variety of tasks such as reviewing documents including medical records, identifying and instructing medical and non-medical experts, assisting with drafting pre-action documents, undertaking legal research, entering relevant information on to the case management system and drafting advicesto clients.

The ideal candidate for the above position must have good communication skills, a confident approach to work and be able to demonstrate our core values:

This is fixed term post for 2 years to cover service needs

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Knowledge

* Law Degree (or equivalent) or equivalent CILEX qualifications
* LPC (or equivalent)
* Knowledge of courts and litigation process
* Structure of the NHS


Experience

* Experience of working in a legal office environment
* Experience of dealing with confidential, sensitive data with an understanding of the maintenance and storage of sensitive records
* Understanding of the need to adhere to office guidelines and procedures
* Working to deadlines
* Defendant/Claimant personal injury or clinical negligence


Skills and Attributes

* Ability to communicate in all formats, in plain English.
* Analytical negotiating ability
* Ability to liaise and communicate with both internal and external personnel at all levels confidently.
* IT Skills/Computer literate to include the ability to learn new technologies and IT introduced
* Ability to prioritise and organise own work
* Ability to recognise own capabilities
* Evidence of excellent client care skills
