Sporting News is seeking part-time freelance contributing football writers to join its Wires Network in the U.K. These are high-volume writing positions on a performance model best suited for candidates looking for supplemental work or aspiring journalists looking to gain experience. Writing for a U.K. audience on SN’s U.K. edition, contributors will cover specific teams across both Premier League and Championship with England national team coverage during international breaks. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of driving traffic and experience utilising best SEO practices to surface content on Google Discover. SN’s Wires Network creates feed-friendly informative content tailored for the casual fan. Can you sell stories with captivating headlines? Can you identify unique, differentiating angles to major stories? Can you source ideas from press conferences, podcasts or social feeds? Can you write quickly, selling a story with concise yet complete copy (300-400 words)? If that sounds like you, we want to talk! A word to the wise: We aren’t looking for beat writer match reports. We aren’t looking for long-form features or investigative reporting. We aren’t looking for hot takes or commentary. While there’s certainly a home for that type of content, it doesn’t mesh with this specific opportunity. We’re looking for candidates who can commit to writing at least 20 articles per week (typically 300-400 words) for at least the next three months. The pay is performance-based tied to traffic.
