Urology Consultant - Functional Urology & Surgical Andrology

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in Functional Urology and Surgical Andrology. This is a unique opportunity to join a world-class multidisciplinary team at one of the UK's leading academic health science centres, where clinical excellence, innovation, and education are at the heart of everything we do.

Based primarily at Charing Cross Hospital, the successful candidate will contribute to the delivery and development of specialist services in functional urology and andrology, including complex diagnostics, & reconstructive surgery. You will be part of a highly skilled team of 14 consultants, supported by nurse specialists, and allied health professionals, delivering care to over 26,000 outpatients and performing 5,000 surgical procedures annually.

This post offers the opportunity to work within a European Academy of Andrology training centre, & a designated Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS) centre for North West London. You will also be involved in the development of a dedicated neuro-urology service, led by Professor Marcus Drake, and collaborate with a wide network of specialists across Imperial and partner institutions.

Main duties of the job

As Consultant Urological Surgeon, your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Care

Provide outpatient consultations for patients with functional urology and surgical andrology conditions.

Conduct urodynamic diagnostic tests and endoscopic surveillance for bladder cancer.

Perform operative procedures including artificial urinary sphincter placement, penile prosthesis surgery, and reconstructive urological surgery. Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and actively manage patient pathways.

Act as an educational supervisor and mentor to junior doctors.

Participate in departmental teaching, audit, and M&M meetings.

Research and Innovation

Engage in translational research in collaboration with Imperial College London.

Contribute to clinical trials and academic initiatives in neuro-urology, andrology, and reconstructive surgery.

Lead clinical audits, incident reporting, and implementation of NICE guidelines.

Contribute to strategic planning, service development, and performance management.

Ensure compliance with infection control, safeguarding, and professional standards.

Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including urologists, colorectal surgeons, neurologists, urogynaecologists, and nurse specialists.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality care in general urology, functional urology, and surgical andrology.

Maintain competencies and ensure prompt attendance at clinical activities.

Engage patients in shared decision-making and uphold the Trusts values of kindness, expertise, collaboration, and aspiration.

Research and Teaching

Contribute to Imperials research mission, with access to funding and academic support.

Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students and junior doctors.

Participate in educational SPA activities and departmental teaching programmes.

Performance and Governance

Drive improvements in clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, and operational performance.

Support junior doctor compliance with EWTD and New Deal.

Participate in recruitment, appraisal, and team objective setting.

Strategic and Leadership Duties

Represent the Trust in clinical networks and external meetings.

Lead specialty meetings and resolve conflicts constructively.

Collaborate with Imperial College London and other stakeholders.

Job Plan Summary

Activities include clinics, MDTs, theatre lists, urodynamics, and weekend operating.

On-call duties include daily ward rounds and emergency cover across Imperial sites


Person Specification


Qualifications

* On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
* On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
* Appropriate Royal College Membership
* MD, PhD


Knowledge & Skills

* Demonstrable evidence of training and expertise in general adult and paediatric urological surgery.
* Significant experience in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment (including operative experience in robotic assisted radical prostatectomy and / or focal therapy)
* Ability to undertake General Urology on-call, including supporting the major trauma centre at SMH.
* Clinical judgment. Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
* Evidence of accuracy, care and timely recording of all necessary clinical data, both written and electronic.
* Experience of working as part of a prostate MDT
* Post CCT Fellowship in robotic surgery or focal therapy for prostate cancer
* Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
* Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
* Knowledge of finance/budgets
* Management of staff


Teaching & Training

* Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff


Audit

* Understanding of principles of clinical audit


Language

* Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements


Academic achievements including research / publications

* Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
