Leonardo Southampton has a strong heritage in Infrared Detectors since the 1950s. Designed and built in the UK, Leonardo's Detectors and thermal imaging sensors play a crucial role in providing visibility and situational awareness, no matter what the environmental conditions.
We have a position available for a Test Systems Engineer to conduct Environmental Testing on our range of Infrared Detectors and support the delivery of test solutions from early prototype development through to productionisation.

Main Purpose of the Job
To carry out environmental tests such as thermal shock, humidity, and temperature cycling. May require travel to other sites across the UK or outside Leonardo at external test houses.
Support the design, development, and through-life support of electro-optical test equipment and processes for Infrared Detectors, from initial development to volume production. Typical equipment includes optical, thermal, electronic components, and test software. Hands-on activity is required, so broad knowledge and proven experience are desired.
Key Responsibilities:
* Interpret qualification and mechanical verification test plans to define test strategies and plans.
* Generate work packages and estimate costs, engaging with internal and external suppliers.
* Deliver work packages on time and within budget.
* Progress test parts through different stages proactively.
* Ensure tests comply with relevant standards.
* Observe, record, and report test activities accurately.
* Maintain a safe working environment and contribute to process improvements.
* Develop bespoke solutions for test requirements.
* Verify test jigs, perform vibration analysis, and resonance searches.
* Program chambers and shaker systems, verify test profiles.
* Procure, install, and commission new test capabilities as needed.
* Prepare technical documentation, including user instructions.
Key Skills and Experience:
Essential:
* HNC/HND or higher in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or similar, or equivalent experience.
* Ability to validate and qualify electro-mechanical designs under environmental conditions.
* Technical comprehension and problem-solving skills.
* Experience with environmental test equipment (shakers, chambers, etc.).
* Strong organizational, planning, and execution skills.
* Attention to detail.
* Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
* Good communication and customer liaison skills.
* Measurement and analytical skills.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of UKAS and ISO17025 standards.
* Experience with electrical testing, electro-optics, or electro-optical instrumentation.
* Mechanical design experience.
* Understanding of vibration control systems and laser vibrometry.
