About the Teams
Across the UK, our communities teams provide local authorities with advice on everything from transport to urban regeneration, flood risk and securing funding. The teams you may join are based in Lincoln, Norfolk and Cardiff.
Lincoln (Highways Engineering)
As a graduate, you will play an important role in supporting the Lincoln team in the delivery of efficient and effective highway schemes. This includes the design of new infrastructure and maintenance of existing projects from footways and cycleways to major junction improvements and bypass schemes. You will work from concept to completion, including supervision of construction.
Day‑to‑Day Activities
* Undertake investigations, site inspections, data collection and analysis, scheme design and development, and supervision of construction.
* Prepare technical design solutions in accordance with approved design procedures.
* Create technical documents and drawings for checking and approval.
* Agree delivery targets with senior staff and report regularly on progress towards milestones.
* Manage the delivery of your own projects with minimal supervision.
Cardiff – RCT “Rhondda Cynon Taf” (Structures & Civil Infrastructure Engineering)
As a graduate focusing on structural engineering, you will inspect infrastructure to understand what makes them “tick” and identify defects. You will also carry out preliminary design calculations and write optioneering and feasibility studies.
Day‑to‑Day Activities
* Inspect essential infrastructure.
* Perform preliminary design calculations.
* Write up optioneering and feasibility studies.
* Gain hands‑on experience developing solutions to problems.
As a graduate focusing on civil infrastructure engineering, you will be involved in drainage and major schemes, learning hydraulic design, sustainable drainage solutions and water management.
Day‑to‑Day Activities
* Use drainage modelling software to prepare existing and proposed drainage networks.
* Prepare design drawings with AutoCAD.
* Attend site visits and design team meetings.
* Attend client meetings to understand the design process.
Norfolk (Highways & Structures Engineering)
WSP provides Norfolk County Council with professional services across highways and infrastructure. Integrated design teams plan and prepare works including highway improvements, structural maintenance and routine upkeep, and manage the bridges and structures team.
Day‑to‑Day Activities
* Assist in planning and drafting of highway improvements and structural maintenance schemes.
* Participate in on‑site inspections and evaluations to inform design and maintenance decisions.
* Prepare documentation supporting engineering decisions, compliance and project tracking.
Graduate Development Programme
Our two‑year Graduate Development Programme supports personal and professional development through core business and professional skills training, career development workshops, mentoring for professional registration and a breadth of on‑the‑job experience.
Qualifications
* Graduated with at least a 2:2 in a master’s or bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject.
* Be able to start work in either April or September 2026.
* Passion for consulting and engineering.
* Desire for the built environment.
* Enthusiasm for creativity and problem solving.
* Willingness to inspire and share new ideas.
