Role Overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a dedicated, compassionate, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a thriving primary school in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. This role is perfect for individuals who are passionate about supporting children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development and making a meaningful difference in a school community.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work with primary-aged pupils who may experience difficulties managing their behaviour, regulating their emotions, or engaging fully in learning. Many children you will support may have SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, ADHD, anxiety, or attachment-related challenges. Others may require guidance in developing self-confidence, managing transitions, and improving peer relationships.

This is a highly rewarding role for someone who enjoys building strong, trusting relationships with children, providing structured pastoral support, and collaborating closely with teaching and support staff to ensure every pupil can thrive.

-----------------------------------

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The purpose of the Behaviour Mentor role is to support children in overcoming barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional challenges. Your work will focus on both proactive and reactive interventions:

* Proactive support: Deliver structured mentoring sessions and small group programs to build emotional resilience, social skills, and self-regulation strategies.

* Reactive support: Provide immediate guidance to children experiencing distress or behavioural challenges, helping them return calmly to learning.

The school employs a trauma-informed, restorative approach to behaviour, recognising that challenging behaviour often signals unmet needs. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will guide children in understanding their emotions, recognising consequences, and learning positive strategies for managing behaviour.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Stevenage, your responsibilities will include:

* Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils requiring additional behavioural or emotional support.

* Running small group sessions focusing on social skills, self-regulation, resilience, and conflict resolution.

* Supporting pupils in classrooms to maintain focus, engagement, and positive behaviour.

* Providing assistance during unstructured times such as break times, lunchtimes, and transitions to promote social development and reduce conflict.

* Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative and trauma-informed strategies.

* Supporting children after incidents to reflect on behaviour, repair relationships, and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.

* Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff, and leadership to create and implement individual behaviour support plans.

* Maintaining accurate records of interventions, incidents, and outcomes.

* Promoting restorative practices, empathy, and problem-solving skills among pupils.

* Upholding safeguarding policies and professional boundaries at all times.

-----------------------------------

The School Environment

This primary school in Stevenage serves a diverse and vibrant community and places strong emphasis on inclusion, pastoral care, and pupil wellbeing. The school recognises that children thrive academically when they feel safe, supported, and valued.

The leadership team places a high value on Behaviour Mentors, providing guidance, supervision, and professional development opportunities. Staff are encouraged to work collaboratively to ensure that each child’s emotional, social, and behavioural needs are addressed effectively.

The school integrates restorative and trauma-informed practices with structured behaviour management approaches, focusing on the long-term development of children’s emotional resilience, self-regulation, and social skills.

-----------------------------------

Students You Will Support

Children supported by the Behaviour Mentor may:

* Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour.

* Struggle with emotional regulation, anxiety, or low self-esteem.

* Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related difficulties.

* Experience challenges in peer relationships, transitions, or routines.

* Be at risk of disengagement from learning or social activities.

Your role will help pupils build confidence, emotional resilience, and positive strategies for managing their behaviour, enabling them to engage fully with school life.

* Are motivated to work in pastoral care and support inclusion.

* Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges.

* Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
