Overview

Fixed term contract/secondment opportunity until 31st March 2026. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to join an established paediatric psychology team within the Paediatric Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. The team includes seven Clinical Psychologists and serves the specialties of diabetes, gastroenterology, cystic fibrosis, oncology, rheumatology, NICU, healthy futures (formerly known as the childhood excessive weight service, CEW), and epilepsy. This role is specifically to work within the paediatric epilepsy and the healthy futures psychology services.

The role contributes to supporting the psychological needs of young people with epilepsy, non-epileptic seizures and excessive weight. The post holder will work closely with experienced qualified psychologists. The work is varied and includes assessment and therapy for individuals and their families who might be receiving challenging news or managing long-term conditions and health difficulties. The post holder will also provide advice, consultation, and training to wider MDT teams.

Responsibilities

* Direct clinical work and administrative support to Clinical Psychology.
* Collecting and analysing data, conducting audits and service evaluations.
* Assisting the epilepsy and healthy futures psychology teams; conducting neuropsychological assessments; delivering psychological interventions under regular supervision from Clinical Psychologists.
* Developing clinical skills through individual work with patients and supporting the development of sleep interventions in the healthy futures service.
* Contributing to the development of Clinical Psychology across the Trust.
* Regularly provide advice, consultation, and training to wider MDT teams.


Qualifications and experience

* Use a range of assessment skills and knowledge of psychometric tools appropriate for the client group.
* Plan and prioritise own workload under the supervision of a clinically qualified psychologist.
* Experience with computerised systems for record keeping and reference.
* Ability to communicate complex information sensitively.
* Assist in implementing therapeutic programmes, group sessions, or other care programmes on a clinically supervised basis.
* Engage in periods of concentrated effort (e.g., report writing, assessment sessions).
* Be prepared to work with individuals who may experience emotional distress and exposure to aggression in clinical settings.
* Receive regular clinical supervision from a senior clinical psychologist in line with good practice guidelines.
* Contribute to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care across settings and agencies serving the client group.
* Use a variety of methods to communicate complex information (including interpreters, written/diagrammatic information, audiotapes, and role-plays).
