Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides care and treatment for a population of over 400,000 people in Chester, West Cheshire, and parts of North Wales. Role Summary
The Clinical Coding Lead reports to the Clinical Coding and Data Governance Manager and is responsible for providing a high‑quality, comprehensive clinical coding service to the Trust’s clinical divisions. The post offers a Recruitment and Retention Premium of £1,500 per annum.
Responsibilities
* Work closely with divisions, advising on data recording practices and ensuring coding accurately reflects care delivered.
* Act as the lead contact with designated divisions and specialties, working with clinical and operational managers to resolve coding queries and communicate complex coding rules.
* Abstract, analyse, translate and enter complex medical patient care records into diagnostic and procedural coding accurately and timely, adhering to Trust deadlines.
* Serve as liaison between divisional clinicians and management teams for all coding related queries.
* Proactively develop and provide regular reports on each division’s clinical coding data, including income, accuracy, benchmarking and consultant validation.
* Work with divisions to improve access to the clinical coding department and drive forward improvements in coding accuracy and depth.
* Develop a strong clinical coding presence within the organisation, ensuring continuous engagement with clinical divisions and driving improvements.
* Ensure the divisional coding team operates with experienced, accurate and high‑performing coders, maintaining maximum quality and required outputs.
* Act as the divisional expert on all coding issues, implementing clinical coding classifications on Trust systems.
* Create and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including divisional managers, clinicians, heads of nursing and operational staff.
* Maintain an excellent working knowledge of local and national coding payment systems and relay highly complex information effectively to a wide range of staff groups.
