Role Overview
The post holder will work with the Lead Nurse for Standards and Quality and key stakeholders to champion the reducing restrictive interventions agenda, ensuring safe, compassionate and high‑quality care that places patients at the centre. As an experienced restraint‑reduction professional, they will work alongside the PMVA team to plan, deliver and monitor evidence‑based training aligned with the Restraint Reduction Network Standards to reduce incidents of violence and aggression. The role provides expert clinical advice, supports risk management, contributes to policy development and undertakes analysis and reporting linked to restrictive practices. The post holder will also lead the development of self‑governing PMVA practice within the Trust, identify income‑generation opportunities, and support ongoing service improvement. As a key member of the Reducing Restrictive Interventions Governance Group, they will help maintain governance structures, oversee the reduction in physical interventions and produce high‑quality reports for the Trust Board on restrictive practice usage, associated risks and wider quality issues, ensuring robust oversight and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Work with the Lead Nurse for Standards and Quality, the Associate Director of Clinical Governance and the PMVA Team Lead to ensure PMVA training is robust, clearly focused and aligned with national guidance and best practice to maintain BILD certification.
* Lead the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of the Trust’s Reducing Restrictive Intervention Strategy, supporting operational reductions in restrictive practices across the organisation.
* Interpret regulatory and advisory frameworks to ensure safe delivery of training and communicate requirements to stakeholders.
* Provide expert guidance, support and professional leadership to multi‑professional teams in risk management, complex case reviews and crisis response.
* Investigate incidents involving restrictive physical interventions and ensure learning is embedded in practice.
* Identify and act on learning from local and national data, research and evidence.
* Work with senior clinical governance leads on initiatives that support continual improvement in reducing violence, aggression and the use of physical interventions, including models such as Safewards.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (RNMH / RNLD) and/or relevant degree in Violence Reduction or similar.
* Experience of working at Band 7 or above for at least 2 years within a mental health / learning disability setting.
* Evidence of continuous personal and professional development.
* Extensive knowledge of specialist areas.
* Knowledge of pre and post registration issues for clinical and professional staff within the NHS.
* Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills.
* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of equality opportunity and diversity, taking into account and being aware of how individual actions contribute to and make a difference to the equality agenda.
* Must hold appropriate UK professional registration.
