This role is based within the Investigations & Disruptions Team in Environmental Markets and Regulation. We’re a national team with officers based across England, ensuring a consistent regulatory approach across the country.
As a department we ensure that companies are disposing of their waste correctly by enforcing government regulations – ‘right waste, right place’.
You will be key to Leading, monitoring and delivering compliance and enforcement activity within your area of waste regulation, to drive a circular economy.

As a STO – Senior Investigator, you will:
* Lead serious and complex investigations into Producer Responsibility fraud and associated offending.
* Direct and undertake the compilation of evidential files for consideration by Legal Services and Counsel.
* Motivate, advise and guide a cohort of Investigation Support Officers to deliver outcomes on your behalf.
* Generate and record intelligence, identifying opportunities to disrupt and prevent criminal activity.
* Be a subject matter expert on investigation across the wider department / organisation.
A mandatory requirement of the role is to undergo Security Clearance Vetting.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role. This may attract an additional payment.

The team

We aim to improve the quality of recycling and ensure waste entering and leaving the country is handled appropriately for recycling and recovery. We help to protect and improve the environment by regulating industry, ensuring compliance, and eliminating illegal activities.
Key areas we regulate: Packaging Waste, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Batteries and International Waste Shipments.
Experience/skills Required
We are looking for applicants who can:
* Be a motivated self-starter with a can-do approach.
* Be well organised with a proven history of action allocation and investigation supervision.
* Be used to working on own initiative and a good team player.
* Be able to balance multiple pieces of work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
* An extensive understanding and practical history of the disclosure of unused material under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.
* Be competent in the interpretation of the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.
* Have experience of undertaking complex suspect and witness interviews.
* Experience of working with partnership agencies.
* Leadership and investigation of serious complex crime including case file assembly.
* Understanding of Criminal Justice processes.
* Experience of leading fraud and money laundering investigations.

You will need to be comfortable with working in a dispersed team. The Environment Agency utilise a hybrid working approach, including office and home working. Regular travel within your base area and travelling for training and meetings is expected in Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds, other areas may be required.
