Role Overview
The Match Day Doctor will be responsible for providing medical oversight and immediate clinical care for players during National League 1 rugby fixtures. The role will involve pitch-side injury assessment, emergency care, concussion management, and supporting the wider medical team to ensure player welfare in line with club and RFU medical standards.
The Match Day Doctor will work closely with the club physiotherapists, sports therapists, and coaching staff to deliver safe and effective medical care during competitive matches.
Key Responsibilities
Match Day Medical Cover
•Provide medical cover for all home fixtures in National League 1
•Be available pitch-side throughout the match for injury assessment and treatment
Emergency Medical Management
•Lead the management of medical emergencies on the field of play
•Coordinate emergency response procedures and liaise with ambulance crews if required
•Ensure the Emergency Action Plan is understood and implemented
Concussion Management
•Apply concussion protocols and remove players from play when appropriate
•Support follow-up management in accordance with guidance from the RFU and World Rugby
Player Medical Assessment
•Provide medical advice to the physiotherapy and coaching staff regarding player safety and participation
Medical Governance
•Ensure match day medical provision meets the standards set by the Rugby Football Union and World Rugby
•Maintain professional standards of documentation where required
Match Day Duties
•Arrive prior to kick-off for pre-match medical preparation
•Check availability and readiness of medical equipment and emergency provisions
•Support post-match injury assessment/ treatment where necessary
Essential Qualifications
•Registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC)
•Current Medical Indemnity Insurance
•PHICIS L2/3
•Up-to-date Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification
Desirable Qualifications
•Diploma or qualification in Sport and Exercise Medicine
•Previous experience working in rugby union or contact sports
•Familiarity with concussion assessment tools and sports trauma management
