Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital is seeking an experienced and dynamic Pathology Hub Manager to lead a multi‑site hub‑and‑spoke pathology service across three hospitals in the South West region.
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for the operational, clinical, and strategic management of a UKAS‑accredited diagnostic service. You will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of high‑quality, efficient, and resilient pathology services that support excellent patient care.
Working closely with consultant pathologists, senior clinical leaders, and operational stakeholders, you will lead service performance, develop people and processes, and drive continuous improvement across the network.
As Pathology Hub Manager, you will:
* Provide strong, visible leadership to a multidisciplinary pathology team across multiple sites, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and collaboration.
* Manage all aspects of people leadership, including recruitment, development, deployment, performance management, absence management, and formal HR processes.
* Hold responsibility for service planning and workforce management to ensure safe, effective, and sustainable service delivery.
* Work collaboratively with consultant pathologists to ensure robust clinical governance and the consistent provision of high‑quality clinical and technical advice.
* Ensure ongoing compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements, including UKAS ISO 15189 and MHRA BSQR 2005.
* Manage and review service level agreements with external suppliers and partners.
* Develop and manage departmental budgets in agreement with your line manager, maintaining accountability for financial performance and accurate management reporting.
* Lead service improvement, standardisation, and quality initiatives across the hub‑and‑spoke network to enhance efficiency, resilience, and patient experience.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring a combination of strong technical expertise, proven leadership capability, and a passion for service excellence.
Essential requirements
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist (or equivalent relevant professional registration).
* Significant post‑registration experience within pathology, including demonstrable leadership experience at senior or hub/team leader level.
* Proven experience leading and developing multidisciplinary teams.
* In‑depth knowledge of pathology quality systems, clinical governance, and regulatory frameworks, including UKAS ISO 15189.
* Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clinical, operational, and corporate stakeholders.
* Strong organisational, financial, and problem‑solving skills, with experience of managing budgets and service performance.
Desirable requirements
* Postgraduate or Master’s qualification in a relevant discipline.
* Experience of managing services across multiple sites or within a networked pathology model.
* Experience leading service transformation or quality improvement initiatives.
