Development Plan: Progression from Band 6 to Band 7 in Community Team Leadership
Objective:
To develop and enhance management and leadership skills within the community team, progressing from a senior Band 6 role towards a Band 7 leadership position with the support and mentorship of existing Band 7 Community Team Leaders.
Duration:
12 months total
1. Phase 1: First 6 months – Focus on skill development and assessment
2. Phase 2: Following 6 months – Transition to Band 7 role with continued support and responsibilities

4. Our Maternity Services at North Bristol NHS Trust include:
15 bed Consultant Led Obstetric Unit. Alongside Midwifery Unit with 800 births per year. Home birth service supporting over 3% of NBT births. Community Midwifery service which covers South Gloucestershire, North Bristol and North Somerset. Consultant Led antenatal services which work closely with intervention radiology in the management of placenta accreta/percreta providing a 24-hour service which accepts tertiary referrals for women with an abnormally invasive placenta. Our antenatal services includes an extensive maternal medicine service with specialist endocrine, epilepsy, haematology, renal and fetal medicine clinics. Gynaecology Service with a clear vision to develop and take the service into the future. Tertiary level 3 Neonatal Unit, which is renowned for its excellent outcomes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Phase 1: Skill Development (Months 1-6)
5. Work under the guidance and mentorship of Band 7 Community Team Leaders.
6. Engage in management and leadership activities, including team coordination, service improvement initiatives, and operational planning.
7. Attend relevant training sessions or workshops focused on leadership, communication, and team management.
8. Document progress through regular reflective logs or supervision sessions.
Assessment:
9. At the end of 6 months, complete a formal assessment and interview to evaluate skills development and readiness for advancement.
10. Review feedback with mentors and supervisors.
Phase 2: Transition to Band 7 Role (Months 7-12)
11. Upon successful assessment, formally advance to Band 7 position.
12. Take on increased leadership responsibilities within the community team, including decision-making, staff support, and project leadership.
13. Continue receiving mentorship and participate in ongoing professional development.
14. Regularly review progress and adjust development goals as needed.
15. Be a registered midwife, with a minimum of four years comprehensive midwifery experience which has included caring for women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, development of antenatal education programmes, and recent experience as the lead professional supporting women through physiological labour and birth.
16. Evidence of teaching and assessing in practice in addition to evidence of post-registration education.
17. Have knowledge of up-to-date developments and contemporary issues in midwifery policy and practice.
18. Have experience in managing a team, including recruitment and selection, appraisal and the management of sickness.
19. Have experience in research activities, audit and risk management, in accordance with the clinical governance framework. Contribution may have been through the collection of audit data for Directorate audits, or through the implementation and evaluation of local audits to promote best practice and highlight any risk management issues within the maternity service.
20. Have evidence of successful change management such as the implementation of new guidelines or services.

21. Registered Midwife minimum of 3 years’ experience. Educated to degree level with evidence of post registration education
22. NLS Qualification
23. Evidence of Management/leadership skills, with Evidence of successful change management
24. Able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and able to work co-operatively with all members of a multi-disciplinary team.
25. Knowledge and understanding of risk management, clinical audit, guideline development and training and how these roles complement each other in maintaining patient safety
26. Knowledge & understanding of research/evidence based practice and its application to midwifery practice
27. Have the ability to utilise the appropriate judgement skills when assessing and advising clients and relatives in crisis situations
28. Knowledge and understanding of current developments/issues in midwifery, local, national and NHS recommendations and initiatives for best practice in Maternity Care, relating to patient safety, quality improvement, patient choices and clinical governance
29. Knowledge of public health issues/child protection
30. A positive attitude, approachable and supportive who is able to promote and display inspirational leadership skills, motivated/Reliable, and adaptable and responsive to changing needs
The successful applicant(s) will normally commence at the minimum of the scale unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
