The Non Medical/AHP Consultant for Surgical Care Practice is a new role in our Trust and demonstrates our commitment to NHS England's Allied Health Professions (AHP) Strategy for England: AHPs Deliver in terms of providing strategic direction to the AHP community to help the AHP community and those they work with maximise their contribution to the aim of improving health outcomes for all, providing better quality care, and improving sustainability of health and care services.
Working alongside the Lead for Advanced Practice and Consultant clinical leads for the specialist services, the NMAHP Consultant for Surgical Care Practice role will include but not limited to:
1. line management of all Surgical Care Practitioner posts
2. Establishment of a robust governance structure to support SCP development and growth of roles
3. Implement a core induction and training process to support newly recruited SCP’s
4. Create a workforce plan for the further development & expansion of SCP practice across the Trust
5. Contribute to national and regional forums to establish Y&S as leader for Surgical Care Practice
You will have Band 8A Surgical Care Practitioner experience and have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in this role. You'll be confident working across professional boundaries and have good experience negotiating and influencing people. Having experience of teaching and presenting is also beneficial.
Main duties of the job
6. To provide clinical leadership and line management for Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) across boundaries of hospitals and specialties.
7. In collaboration with the Associate Chief AHP and the Advanced Practice Professional Lead, ensure that services are of a high quality and adhere to professional, national, regional, and local standards and have a key role in the development of the governance agenda by ensuring AHP/Nursing contribution to the provision of quality clinical care and performance standards relating to the four pillars of advanced practice.
8. Specifically, ensuring compliance with all legislation relating to the role of extended, advanced and consultant practice, such as Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) & Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR) where required.
9. To work with stakeholders across the system and sectors to provide wider perspectives and expert clinical knowledge in relation to Surgical Care Practitioner Led services.
10. To operate as an expert Surgical Care Practitioner and manage a highly complex clinical caseload including assessment and triage advice and consultation.
11. To demonstrate enhanced/extended skills in own clinical specialist area through personal and professional development, and lead programmes of mentorship and development, evaluating the impact of change in practice across systems for Surgical Care Practitioners.
12. To deliver an individualised programme of treatment for a complex and specialised group of patients. Making the best use of consultancy, advice, and expertise through working directly at systems level, supporting other senior leaders to work together across health and social care.
13. To provide professional expertise to clinical and care pathways, services, organisations, systems, senior leaders, and commissioners concerning the development of surgical care practitioner services across the system. Sharing and using expertise across the system and providing direction and guidance for achieving excellence in practice.
14. Lead on and implement evidence-based guidelines for the management of patients, providing expert advice within the organisation and regionally/nationally.
15. To actively participate in research activity and practice development, as a major job requirement. Additionally, promote and co-ordinate research activity providing a link between clinicians, academic research centres/organisations/ and the Head of AHP Research & Head of Nursing Research. Additionally, as part of the research, ensuring any changes to IR(ME)R agreements or entitlements have been fully enacted and approved.
16. Acting as a national and international ambassador providing expertise through learning and development opportunities, conferences, and university honorary appointments, to allow closer links between education, research, and practice.
17. To work flexibly as a member of the senior clinical team in the Surgery Care Group, responding to service needs and supporting both inpatient and outpatient services. This may include input outside core hours, and travelling to other hospital sites including Scarborough, Harrogate, Malton, Selby, and Easingwold.
