Overview
Assistant Practitioner (Special Care Baby Unit) – Glangwili General Hospital. We are seeking an experienced healthcare professional with a passion for neonatal care to join a developing Special Care Baby Unit that provides short-term intensive care, high dependency, and special care with a focus on evidence-based practice and family-centred care.
We have recently developed a 4-cot Transitional Care Unit and a Neonatal Outreach Service to support families in the community. You will work across a day/night rotation, delivering direct care and supporting junior staff and student nurses.
Main duties of the job
Your Aim in This Role
To provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to neonates, support their families, and contribute to the development of junior staff while upholding high clinical standards and professional integrity.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver direct care to neonates, including:
o Monitoring and recording vital signs
o Performing blood sampling
o Maintaining accurate written and electronic records
* Support the handover of care under supervision, ensuring continuity and safety.
* Promote and maintain confidentiality, information governance, and safeguarding.
* Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal oversight of registered nurses.
* Teach and support junior staff and pre-registration student nurses.
* Contribute to a day/night rotation, ensuring consistent care across shifts.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome to apply.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential
* Level 4 vocational qualification in a relevant health care subject or Certificate in Health Care Support Worker Education
* GCSE Maths and English Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* Evidence of continuing personal development relevant to the role
* Clinical knowledge relevant to the role
* Understanding of safeguarding legislation (adults/children), The Mental Capacity Act, and Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards
* Understanding of HCSW Code of Conduct, All Wales Delegation guidelines, and All Wales Band 4 Assistant Practitioner Governance Framework
Desirable
* Local knowledge of statutory and voluntary services
* Teaching or assessment qualification
Experience
Essential
* Significant and recent experience in clinical care for babies/children
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to manage challenging situations
* Experience in a range of clinical skills within scope of practice and governance framework (e.g., catheter care, vital signs, risk assessments, wound care support)
Desirable
* Wound care (non-complex)
* Experience in palliative care
* Administration of medicines (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular)
Language

* Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
