Project Details

The successful MSc candidate will join a multidisciplinary team at Cranfield Water Science Institute, working closely with both academic supervisors and industry experts from Anglian Water. The project is supervised by Dr Irene Carra (1st Supervisor) and Prof Peter Jarvis (2nd Supervisor), both of whom bring significant expertise in water treatment and environmental chemistry.

Key Research Activities Include

– Investigating and comparing the performance of various adsorbents for PFAS removal using rapid small-scale column testing (RSSCT).

– Evaluating the influence of contact time, media type, and multi-stage configurations on treatment efficacy.

– Characterising the scientific mechanisms underlying PFAS adsorption in water treatment processes.

The student will have access to Cranfield’s bespoke researcher training programme, gaining skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Essential Candidate Qualities And Skills Include

– A first- or second-class UK honours degree or international equivalent in a related discipline.

– Background knowledge in water treatment processes, particularly adsorption and ion exchange.

– Laboratory experience, especially conducting bench-scale experiments (e.g., batch tests, column studies, RSSCTs).

– Familiarity with analytical techniques used in water quality monitoring, such as UV-Vis spectrophotometry, DOC measurement, liquid or gas chromatography, or mass spectrometry.

– Understanding of micropollutants in water.

– Data analysis and interpretation skills, using software such as Microsoft Excel, R, Python, or similar.

– Strong motivation, good communication skills, and an ability to work collaboratively with academic and industry stakeholders.
