Background The Centre for Care is a flagship multi‑disciplinary centre (2021‑2026) funded by the ESRC, NIHR and the Office for National Statistics. It is administered by the University of Sheffield and led by investigators from several universities and research partners. The overarching objective is to codesign impactful research to improve understanding and redress inequalities in care experiences and systems in the UK and internationally.
The Centre for Care – one of the partners in the School of Social Policy and Society – recognises the University of Birmingham as one of the main centres of excellence for social care and health research in the UK. We are seeking a full‑time Research Fellow to work full‑time until 31st October 2026. The post holder will be the primary researcher on the Care Data Infrastructure team and will undertake research under the supervision of Professor Matt Bennett.
Research Objectives
* Use administrative data to inform evidence‑based decision‑making.
* Analyse client‑level data to understand health inequalities.
Main Duties
* Work with the line manager on a day‑to‑day basis.
* Develop research objectives and proposals, with assistance from a mentor if required.
* Contribute to writing bids for research funding.
* Analyse, link and interpret quantitative data, including administrative and panel datasets using advanced methods.
* Apply quantitative analyses to develop new intellectual insights.
* Disseminate findings through publications, research seminars and stakeholder engagement.
* Develop new quantitative models, techniques and methods, including data visualisation.
* Manage and administer research tasks.
* Contribute to impact and public engagement activities, including stakeholders and the public.
* Collect research data through literature reviews and interviews.
* Present research outputs and draft academic publications at seminars and conferences.
* Provide guidance to support staff assisting with research.
* Tackle problems that may affect research objectives and deadlines.
* Promote equality and diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Person Specification
* Degree and normally a higher degree in economics, health economics, politics, statistics, social policy, sociology, gerontology or a related discipline, with evidence of training in advanced quantitative methods.
* High level of quantitative analytical ability, including large‑scale panel data.
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
* Fluency in advanced quantitative models, techniques or methods and ability to develop new ones, including visualising findings.
* Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
* Understanding of and contribution to broader management and administration processes.
* Capacity to plan and organise research projects.
* Co‑ordination of own work with others to avoid conflicts or duplication.
* Knowledge of the equality act and ability to ensure equality treatment in daily activity.
