Vacancies Orthopaedic Consultant with an SI in Hand and Wrist Surgery
Role Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Hand and Wrist surgery to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at North Devon District Hospital, part of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive, part‑time 5 PA post, delivered on a hand and wrist‑only basis, with no requirement to participate in the on‑call rota. The post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the expansion and redevelopment of the hand and wrist service, in response to increasing elective demand and growing subspecialist hand trauma activity. The department has recently undergone a restructure to expand consultant numbers and to support service sustainability. This includes ring‑fenced time for leadership and development roles, while maintaining a 1:8 Consultant general orthopaedic trauma on‑call rota. The successful candidate will not take part in this on‑call rota, making this post particularly attractive for those seeking a focused subspecialist role with predictable working patterns. You will work closely with established multi‑disciplinary teams, including highly skilled Barnstaple‑based hand therapists, and maintain strong collaborative links with the hand and wrist service in Exeter, supporting high‑quality, joined‑up care across the Trust. The post is ideally suited to a consultant who is enthusiastic about service development, collaborative working, and delivering high‑quality elective and trauma care within a supportive and forward‑looking department. North Devon District Hospital is located in Barnstaple, offering an outstanding quality of life with close proximity to the coast, Exmoor National Park, and excellent opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
