Data Analyst
Location: Strategy & Intelligence Department, Service Headquarters
Responsible to: Performance and Assurance Manager
Salary: Grade 6, £31,537 to £34,434 (pro-rata)
Hours: 18 hours per week (flexible working scheme available)
About The Role
An exciting opportunity has opened up within the Strategy and Intelligence Department for a Data Analyst. In this role you will be responsible for data handling, data analysis, modelling, mapping, reporting and research across a range of subject areas. This work will support the generation and collation of intelligence to inform organisational decision making, risk management, resource planning, evaluation and performance monitoring processes.
The role supports the improvement of Fire Service outcomes by delivering insight, analysis, and intelligence in order to drive change, ensuring that the data is robust in terms of quality and quantity. The Data Analyst is also responsible for leading investigations into internal data issues and data quality, and delivering training to colleagues within the Service.
Key Duties
* To obtain data from Service information systems by using SQL query writing and to manipulate and apply analysis to this data; in order to turn this into information to be used in Service decision making.
* Collate, organise and present data in appropriate formats based on requirements of audience and stakeholders. To conduct effective information analysis using Excel, SQL, Postgres and Power BI.
* To prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and ad-hoc statistical reports as required. This will involve producing graphs, tables and other presentation formats.
* Make use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in the collation and presentation of data.
* Interpret, communicate and present analytical findings in oral, graphical and written form, ensuring these meet user requirements and that support and understanding is provided to stakeholders.
* Incorporate quality assurance scrutiny in all areas of research and analysis and data management, to ensure validity and reliability, including establishing and documenting audit trails for research and analysis undertaken.
* To attend meetings with stakeholders and represent the data team as required.
* To be a point of communication on behalf of the Service to external bodies such as those involved in National statistics and data collection.
* Lead in coordinating the calculation and reporting of sustainability and decarbonisation for all SFRS sites in line with the Environmental Strategy.

The successful candidate may be required to work flexible hours and travel to different service locations.
Knowledge And Experience
* Knowledge and experience of report writing
* Well-developed organisational and problem-solving skills
* Excellent proven communication skills, with experience of communicating and influencing technical data at all levels of an organisation and via various platforms.
* Relevant experience in the use of MS Office suite, particularly MS Excel and Word.
* The use of Structured Query Language (SQL) (or similar) for the retrieval and management of data.
* Experience of data analysis and data processing.
* Ability to conduct research, collate and analyse data; interpret and present results accurately and effectively.
Skills, Abilities, And Personal Qualities
* SQL, T-SQL and advanced Excel skills
* Experience of Environmental reporting, such as using carbon factors.
* Experience and knowledge of data warehousing techniques
* Knowledge of Project Management and coordination
* Experience of measuring and presenting Performance data.
* Experience of data interpretation, through the creation of reports and visual representation of data (charts/tables).
* Knowledge or experience of software packages such as Power Bi and GIS mapping tools.
* Experience of performance analysis in a public sector organisation.
* Knowledge and understanding of FRS responsibilities under GDPR legislation and training in policy and procedures. This will include working in a highly confidential environment.
