Consultant Ophthalmologist- Special interest in Paediatrics
This post supports the large and specialist paediatric unit based at Northampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service at NGH and support a county‑wide service for Northampton and Daventry. The appointee will help lead and develop the service and be an active member of the wider Ophthalmology team.
Essential that the post‑holder holds the FRCOphth or an equivalent qualification and is on the GMC specialist register or will obtain a relevant CCT within 6 months of interview. A desire to participate in research and clinical audit is essential.
Main duties of the job include providing a comprehensive Ophthalmic service at NGH and supporting the county‑wide service, with access to a serviceable vehicle and a valid driving licence.
The post includes providing a paediatric Ophthalmology service while also being a capable general ophthalmologist able to undertake general service provision. Proficiency in cataract surgery and a commitment to training are essential. On‑call for Paeds is 24/7 and normally contact is via phone/text/email within office hours.
Responsibilities for patients in care, proper departmental functioning, teaching duties, postgraduate medical education, and teaching of ophthalmic trainees and nursing/other healthcare staff are expected. Participating in departmental educational meetings and a robust clinical audit programme is required, with involvement in regional and national audits as appropriate. The post holder should report all critical incidents and support departmental governance meetings. A commitment to service development and generating revenue for the Trust and department through innovative practice is expected.
