We are delighted to invite applications for a Clinical Specialist Nurse post to join the Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases (CIPPRD) at Maudsley Hospital. We are a national and specialist outpatient Tier 4 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Part time applications will be considered.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic Clinical Specialist Nurse to join our team in the treatment of children with neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioral problems. The services specialise in the psychiatric & psychological treatment of children and young people in the context of rare diseases or conditions with organic involvement. Including genetic conditions, acquired brain injury, childhood dementias and major physical illnesses. The post holder will be working closely with the MDT including psychiatrists, psychologists, specialty doctors, and data clinicians with excellent admin support.

We are a specialist psychopharmacology centre which provides whole-person medicine and integrated mental and physical healthcare. We have excellent links and provide expert consultation with other national paediatric specialties, post brain injury rehabilitation and third sector organisations. We are well-regarded by service-users across the UK and internationally.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide specialist assessment, intervention, monitoring and care-coordination within the MDT for children with a range of rare diseases, genetic and organic conditions. Many of whom will have other neurodevelopmental conditions including an intellectual disability and autism.
Key responsibilities include:
- Clinical assessment of neuropsychiatric and neurobehavioral difficulties. Including comorbid conditions such as anxiety and mood difficulties and other neurodevelopmental problems (e.g. ADHD)
- Care-coordination and case management alongside the MDT. To assist with multiagency liaison with education, social care, and local health services, including safe transitioning to adult LD services where needed.
- Implementation and monitoring of outcomes in ensuring high quality integrated physical and mental health care alongside the multidisciplinary team.

(Due to move to the Pears Maudsley Children and Young People (PMCYP) at the Maudsley Hospital in early 2026)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To provide high quality assessments and interventions for children and young people within the CIPPRD both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• To comprehensively assess, manage and monitor a range of physical and mental health difficulties. Providing integrated physical and mental health care alongside the multidisciplinary team
• To provide care-coordination and assist with the discharge process of patients. Including liaison with local services for safe handover and preparing the necessary documentation.

• To contribute to the effective working of the CIPPRD. This will include providing written documents and reports in a timely manner as needed as part of patient care.
• To work in accordance with clinical guidelines and the policies and procedures of the service, seeking help from clinical/professional supervisor or manager as needed.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. First level nursing qualification/registration RMN or RNLD
2. All applicants will require professional registration with a statutory body. (A/I)

Desirable criteria

3. A strong portfolio of additional training and qualifications relevant to working with children and young people with rare / organic medical conditions, Intellectual Disability, Autism, mental health difficulties and behaviour that challenges

Experience

Essential criteria

4. Experience and ability to function as a specialist practitioner with children and young people, including those with rare / organic medical conditions, Intellectual Disability or Neurodevelopmental Disorders (A/I)
5. Experience of working as a case manager in child and adolescent mental health or Intellectual Disability/ Neurodevelopmental/Paediatric services (A/I)
6. Evidence of good practice in child and adolescent mental health assessments, assessments of behaviour and performance, family functioning (A/I)

Desirable criteria

7. Experience in assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating care for children and young people with co-morbid mental health problems in the context of complex intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental and rare / organic medical conditions, including both physical and mental health risks.

Understanding and Knowledge

Essential criteria

8. Mental health disorders in children and adolescents across all ages (A/)
9. Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the general evidence base for treatment of children and young people with rare/organic medical conditions, Intellectual Disability, Autism and associated mental health difficulties and/or behaviour that challenges. (A/I)
10. Knowledge of clinical assessment, formulation and risk assessment in complex presentations (A/I)

Desirable criteria

11. Experience of carrying out research relevant to children and young people or people with rare/organic medical conditions, Intellectual Disability or neurodevelopmental disorders. (A/I)
12. Training in ADOS/ ADI-R.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria

13. To be aware of, monitor and manage a range of physical and mental health difficulties, as indicated by the medical staff.
14. Evidence of competency in clinical judgement (A/I)
15. Evidence of competency in risk assessment (A/I)
16. Evidence of using child protection in practice effectively (A/I)

Desirable criteria

17. Evidence of organisational skills to deliver targets and meet deadlines (A/I)
