Offer description

Please note that this job is open only to current members of staff of Cardiff University who are eligible for redeployment. Internal Redeployment Only - Research Assistant Division of Population Medicine Cardiff University School of Medicine College of Biomedical and Life Sciences Together with colleagues in Swansea and Cardiff Metropolitan Universities we are offering an exciting post that will support the delivery of a cardiovascular, stroke and frailty project. The project outline is given in italics below: Aims To assess treatment and control of hypertension and lipids and appropriate antithrombotic treatment prescribing according to guideline standards To identify people living with frailty (not frail, mildly, moderately and severely frail) and stroke disease and characterise clinical outcomes. To assess the relative impact of appropriate secondary prevention implementation on clinical outcomes, stratified by frailty status. Background Secondary prevention following a stroke is known to reduce the risk of further strokes. However, only a small proportion of people living with stroke are on the recommended treatment. Optimal management of risk factors is challenging in older, frailer people, who also have worse outcomes after a stroke. There is limited evidence evaluating secondary prevention quality and outcomes in frail populations. Methods Using the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank, after a first stroke, people will be characterised as either fully, partially or not adequately treated for secondary prevention of stroke. Frailty will be calculated and tested against clinical outcomes, including mortality. Treatment level will be compared within frailty groups to assess benefits between intensive treatment and less intensive treatment. Expected Outcomes Population level evidence of secondary prevention care and the effect of frailty on outcomes in stroke disease. The post-holder will be an active member of Division of Population Medicine. The post-holder will also contribute to the overall research record of the School and University, supporting and contributing to research leading to publications in high quality academic journals and impact, pursuing excellence in research and inspiring others to do the same. The post is funded by the Health and Social Care Research Wales and the Stroke Association and be based in Cardiff University, with Dr Jonathan Hewitt who is the project lead. It is envisaged that the post-holder will be able to contribute to research across each of the work packages but focus primarily on the frailty facing aspects, carrying out supporting work that helps lead to the publishing of research in high-quality journals. The post-holder will also be given the opportunity to develop their own research career interests and experience, including committing time to specific funded projects where they have been co-applicants or named researchers, or for example seeking a PhD fellowship/studentship. This role is based at Heath Park. Informal enquiries about the role should be directed to: Jonathan Hewitt, Chief Investigator on hewittj2@cardiff.ac.uk.
