We have an exciting opportunity within the S&SD team in Eastern Routes Capital Programmes for a Sustainability Specialist. Our vision is to deliver industry-leading projects safely and sustainably.
The role offers the opportunity to influence the sustainability performance in Network Rail’s biggest portfolio of enhancement and renewal projects. This role will assess environmental, social value, and economic opportunities and risks for a portfolio of projects.
As the Sustainability Specialist, you’ll provide professional environment and sustainability advice and support. This includes managing assurance and governance processes and supporting leadership in implementing environment and sustainability improvement programmes.
This role can be based in London or York. It involves some travel across the Eastern region of Network Rail and requires working in the office at least three days a week.

About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities
1. Support project activities, including tender reviews, pre-construction info, supplier meetings, and assurance processes, working with project teams to ensure compliance with legislation, standards, and processes.
2. Implement sustainability aspects of the Safety and Sustainability strategy, working with relevant business areas and supply chain to deliver and report on progress.
3. Promote a sustainability culture within the business unit by leading by example and delivering the Capital Programmes S&SD strategy at a delivery level.
4. Create internal and external sustainability communications to foster a learning culture and improve safety performance.
5. Provide guidance on sustainability data trends to support project assurance and improvement opportunities.
6. Offer technical advice on environmental management and sustainability during project planning, design, and delivery, including certification and survey requirements.
7. Support investigation panels on environmental incidents to facilitate learning and improve performance.
8. Assist teams in becoming learning organizations by supporting outcomes from assurance activities and incident reviews.
9. Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, regulatory bodies, NGOs, educational institutions, and charities to enhance sustainability performance.
Job Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
* Practitioner member of IEMA or equivalent (e.g., CIEEM).
* Degree in environment/sustainability or relevant field, or equivalent experience.
* Significant experience managing environment and social value matters in construction projects.
* In-depth understanding of environment and social legislation.
* Experience in implementing sustainability improvements.
* Experience with management systems (ISO or similar).
* Knowledge of project management and lifecycle in the railway or similar industry.
* Strong relationship-building skills with stakeholders and team members.
* Ability to promote teamwork and challenge existing approaches positively.
* Decision-making skills considering cost, priorities, and customer impact.
* Experience representing teams internally and externally.
* Experience managing biodiversity and ecology risks.
* Full member of IEMA or equivalent.
* Qualification in incident investigation.
* Experience with sustainability frameworks like CEEQUAL, BREEAM, or similar.
* Experience collaborating for positive sustainability outcomes.
