Overview
Applications are invited for a Dental Therapist in Restorative Dentistry based at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. The Restorative Dentistry Service is part of the Maxillo-facial Department including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery and Orthodontics. The post will be one day per week and duties may be performed at other hospitals within the service and in Community Hospitals. The post holder will work in the Oral & Maxillofacial Outpatient Department and in Community Hospitals, carrying out a range of tasks involving direct and indirect care in line with defined occupational policies and departmental protocols. The post holder is responsible for ensuring all policies and procedures are observed to meet CTMUHB requirements and General Dental Council (GDC) Standards and Code of Conduct.
Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. Welsh language ability is not essential, but speaking and listening at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above is advantageous. Level 3 corresponds to basic conversations with patients about everyday health.
Responsibilities
* Provide dental care for patients with complex medical, physical and mental health needs, including Head and Neck Oncology patients.
* Provide an Oral Health Programme for Head and Neck patients, autonomously or under a written prescription from a Dentist as per General Dental Council Scope of Practice.
* Maintain high standards of patient care, confirm consent, obtain medical histories and support clinical governance.
* Develop and implement policies where appropriate and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
* Provide support and clinical supervision of junior staff, including dental students, undergraduates and junior oral health practitioners.
* Maintain accurate, current, comprehensive and concise records in line with GDC Standards and the UHB’s Patient Record Policy.
* Conform to guidance provided by the General Dental Council for the role of a Dental Therapist.
* Liaise with Clinical Specialists (Doctors, Dentists, Speech and Language Therapists, Dietitians and Clinical Nurse Specialists) regarding individual patient requirements and planned care programmes.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Registered Dental Therapist with the General Dental Council (GDC) and knowledge of relevant policies and standards.
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Experience in restorative dentistry and management of patients with complex needs is desirable.
* Welsh language skills are desirable (as noted above).
