Job overview

Safari Ward (haematology, oncology & BMT day care and outpatient department)

Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse

Full time

1 year secondment to cover Maternity Leave or permanent posts

We have job opportunities for experienced NMC Registered Nurses to join our team. There are permanent or fixed-term secondment posts, and we could provide opportunities for staff rotation across wards and specialties and offer flexible working. The successful candidate will take responsibility for effective leadership; provision of expert clinical care and advice; and ensuring the provision of high quality care to patients and families. Our teams work together to provide high quality, expert and innovative care to treat children and young people (CYP) with a cancer diagnosis. We actively trial new therapies and different models of care. We are at the forefront of cancer treatment. Our medical and nursing experts work in collaboration with the Institute of Child Health (ICH) and with other treatment centres across the United Kingdom.

Safari Day Care and Outpatients services are delivered in two separate areas. The Day Care service is managed in the GOSH Southwood Building and the Outpatients service is managed on Rabbit Ward in the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM) Building, which is adjacent to GOSH.

The day care service has 20 beds and sees haematology, oncology, CAR-T and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) patients for treatment, procedures, investigations and reviews. We have a theatre in Safari, which enables us to undertake procedures requiring short general anaesthesia on site. Patients attend for procedures under general anaesthesia, day treatment including intravenous or intra-reservoir chemotherapy, blood sampling, tests, imaging, clinical reviews and ambulatory care. The ward team works collaboratively with medical staff, advanced health practitioners, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and play staff to deliver high quality care to children and young people (CYP) with cancer. Planning is underway to build the new Children Cancer Centre at GOSH to expand the service and meet projected demands.

Main duties of the job

The outpatient service has six clinic consultation rooms and sees haematology, oncology and BMT patients for clinical assessments or reviews, blood sampling and tests.

The department is part of the CYP Cancer Unit at GOSH, which forms the Joint Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) with UCLH for North London. Children aged 13 years and above are treated at UCLH, and younger children at GOSH. The Cancer Unit at GOSH provides care for all children under the age of one across North and South London. The department is an active participant in national and international collaborative clinical trials and has close working relationships with the BMT Team. The Unit shares the care of patients with Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCU) and community teams across London.

As a Directorate, we are committed to your professional development and offer diverse learning and training opportunities, which could be individually structured to include study to Bachelors Degree, Post-Graduate Diploma, or Masters Degree. Professional development is actively encouraged. We have a clear development programme closely linked to appropriate competencies, which encourages progression through an exciting and rewarding career in CYP cancer nursing. At GOSH, we are committed to helping staff achieve their professional potential and this is actively supported by the teams of Nurse Practice Educators, Ward Managers, and Senior Nurse Leaders. We have an effective Mentorship programme and support staff through obtaining further educational qualifications.

As a Trust, we have the GOSH Learning Academy (GLA) and the Centre for Outcomes and Experience Research in Children’s Health, Illness and Disability (ORCHID) supporting staff’s academic, professional and inquisitive ambitions.

Working for our organisation

We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as the communities we serve, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including people with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic heritage, people with a disability, and people from LGBTQ+ communities. By growing an ever more diverse workforce, we’ll have a greater range of perspectives and knowledge, meaning that we can provide the children and young people at our hospital with even better care.

Our hospital is committed to creating an environment that is open and inclusive. Our staff are encouraged to engage with colleagues through the following networks: REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) ENABLED (Enhancing Abilities & Leveraging Disabilities Network), PRIDE and Women’s networks; all of which are sponsored by a member of our Executive Management Team.

We want to ensure that all of our people, regardless of their background, are seen and heard. We want to attract applicants that share our commitment to inclusion and that understand diversity is a strength that is embraced and valued.
