Job Summary
The Estates department at Westmorland General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical and mechanical engineers, creative building craftsperson, and dedicated support staff. We are recruiting a motivated and enthusiastic Mechanical Fitter to join us. You should be experienced, time served, and suitably qualified in mechanical fitting, manufacturing, or vehicle maintenance and fault finding – as skills are transferable.
Main Duties
Working under the Mechanical Estates Officer, you will carry out mechanical maintenance and installation work within acute and community NHS properties – including heating, ventilation, pressure systems, air conditioning, medical gases, and other healthcare‑related mechanical services. You will work as part of a team and independently, with a focus on safety for patients and staff. Flexible working is required to support other trades and maintain building services.
A healthcare background would be advantageous but not essential; specific training will be provided. Experience of ventilation and/or air conditioning is particularly desired.

We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital – and a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital, GP practices, and Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.

Education and Qualifications
Essential
* Full apprenticeship or equivalent approved training.
* NVQ3, BTEC or equivalent.
* Computer literate.
* Driving licence.
* Certificate in Mechanical Safety (Skilled Person CP2).
* Certificate in Water Hygiene (Skilled Person WH1).
Desirable
* City and Guild qualifications in relevant subjects.
* Relevant AP/CP training or equivalent qualifications.
Experience
Essential
* Experience of hospital systems and equipment, policies and procedures especially HTM's and relevant DoH guidance.
* Ability to deal with information sensitively and confidentially.
* Ability to work as part of a team and independently during unsocial hours.
* Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with department members, other Trust staff, patients, visitors, the public, utilities and emergency services as required.
Desirable
* Experience and use of computerised building management systems and facilities management systems.
