Overview
Consultant Paediatric Dermatologist on a substantive contract. You will join a team of 8 other consultants at a time of departmental expansion. Nominal base to be arranged.
The Dermatology service is a trust-wide service with medical and surgical components, delivering a range of Consultant and nurse-led services from University Hospital of North Durham, Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital. General Dermatology and Specialist Nurse Clinics operate across sites; specialist clinics and nurse-run procedure clinics run from UHND only. Urgent Suspected Cancer clinics are based at UHND, with Dermatology and Plastic Surgery co-located for seamless daily surgery. GPSI and specialist nurse clinics and surgery are also offered from community locations as part of the service.
Job responsibilities
* Provide general and paediatric dermatology services including acute assessment of patients.
* Deliver and champion high quality and safety as a clinical leader within Dermatology.
* Provide a comprehensive dermatology clinical service with emphasis on paediatric dermatology; outpatient consultations and specialist activities as agreed with the department; ensure ongoing care of patients in their charge and proper department functioning.
* Manage clinic bookings in line with British Association of Dermatologists guidelines; supervise inpatient or outpatient treatment as appropriate.
* Undertake skin surgery in appropriate paediatric populations.
* Contribute to departmental teaching and supervise junior staff; participate in CPD to meet national requirements; work with wider MDT to optimise patient outcomes.
* Participate in audit, governance, safeguarding of patients (with a focus on children and young people), patient experience initiatives, and service governance activities.
* Collaborate with operational managers and clinical leads to meet access standards and maintain high standards of quality, safety and access; deputise for colleagues during leave or sickness as practicable.
* Represent the Dermatology service in internal and external trust forums where applicable.
Person specification
Experience: Essential – Medical dermatology and paediatric dermatology; medical teaching; involvement in paediatric safeguarding processes. Desirable – leadership roles in paediatric dermatology; paediatric dermatology and dermatology surgery; clinical research experience.
Special requirements: Essential – flexible team worker; commitment to CME/CPD; willingness to undertake additional professional duties.
Statutory registration: Essential – full and specialist GMC registration (Licence to Practice); CCT/CESR in Dermatology or within 6 months of attaining at time of interview.
Qualifications: Essential – MBBS or equivalent; MRCP. Desirable – MD, PhD or other research qualifications.
Skills & knowledge: Essential – ability to offer expert paediatric dermatology opinion; manage a broad range of skin conditions; NHS management and delegation skills; excellent communication and teamwork; supervisory experience; experience in audit. Desirable – teledermatology experience in paediatric cases.
