Overview
Comms Design Ltd, part of the Unipart Group, is a cutting-edge engineering design and manufacturing company that specialises in electronic product development. Our expertise extends to embedded and application software development, mechanical engineering design, electronic hardware design, state-of-the-art radio coverage planning and simulation, training, support and maintenance, end to end product development.
We are now recruiting for a Senior Support Engineer to join our busy team to provide technical leadership in production and support, and also overseeing the assembly; testing; and repair of Comms Design products. The role will report into the Operations Manager and will be based at the Comms Design offices in Harrogate.
Responsibilities
* Act as the escalation point for the Company production/support technician(s) on complex builds, repairs and testing.
* Oversee the production testing, ensuring compliance with documentation and standards.
* Lead continuous improvement activities where recurring faults occur to find the root cause, driving corrective actions and/or design changes.
* Support New Product Introduction (NPI) with feedback on manufacturability and serviceability to the Company Engineering Design team.
* Coordinating and conducting the testing of key product circuit boards as they are delivered from suppliers.
* Participating in formal testing, including factory and site acceptance testing of project deliverables.
* Conducting periodic reviews of key components for obsolescence and reporting any issues upwards.
* Provide guidance and technical mentorship to the support technician(s).
* Ensure team collaboration and knowledge sharing.
* Provide technical support for returned equipment and customer issues.
* Conduct detailed failure investigations and prepare reports within the Company ticketing system.
* Liaise with customers and project managers on technical escalations.
* Develop and refine test procedures, work instructions, and build processes.
* Identify opportunities for efficiency, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
* Contribute to component lifecycle management and obsolescence reviews.
Qualifications
Candidates must be qualified to degree level in an Electrical/Electronics or engineering related field, and must have experience of support engineering/technical support/electronics repair. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate the following criteria;
* Experience of electrical and electronic components including assembly of products containing electronics.
* Proven experience in diagnosing and resolving complex electronic issues (component and system level).
* Experience in mentoring junior engineers / technicians.
* Ability to develop and improve existing test processes and production documentation.
* Strong written and oral communication skills for technical report writing customer liaison.
* Able to deliver high standards of work.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Good hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity to carry out in-house soldering of electronics to IPC J-STD-001.
* Willingness to learn and the ability to accept constructive feedback.
* High degree of IT literacy including the google platform.
