The Role

An exciting opportunity has become available within Fresh Futures’ Brian Jackson College Team. We are seeking an enthusiastic Pastoral Support Worker Post 16 to join our team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in role in the primary role of our LBSW will provide support and have responsibility for the learning progress, emotional development, and welfare of disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils in our post 16 provision to support our organisation’s mission.

Why the role exists and overall responsibility

This role is crucial in supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people—both in educational settings and in the community—to overcome barriers, re-engage in learning, and develop the social, emotional and academic skills they need to succeed.

Main activities

* Deliver offsite and in-house learning through home visits, small group sessions, lesson support, and 1:1 interventions.
* Develop and deliver tailored lessons and resources to support social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
* Engage with pupils who are emotionally based school avoiders (EBSA), encouraging positive reintegration into education.
* Contribute to and update Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), identifying strategies and resources to meet pupil outcomes.
* Act as a safeguarding advocate—identifying risks, following procedures, and ensuring pupil safety.
* Work closely with families, ensuring inclusive, transparent and supportive relationships.
* Maintain and update key records including targets, intervention plans, provision maps and reports for the pastoral team and external agencies.
* Collaborate with external professionals including CAMHS, Educational Psychologists, and SENDACT.
* Support pupils through emotional and academic transitions at the end of their placements.
* Contribute to professional development, continuous improvement, and reflective practice.
* Champion a trauma-informed, nurturing, and relational approach to all interactions.

Knowledge, training and experience required

* Experience within SEMH and behavioral needs setting
* Experience of working with young people at KS3 & KS4 in an educational setting (formal or non-formal) setting
* GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English. Teaching assistant qualification (desirable)
* Experience of Safeguarding children in education
* Knowledge of childhood trauma (desirable)
* Positive handling training (desirable)
* Must have a solid understanding of nurture and be willing to adapt to the college’s nurturing ethos

Key personal characteristics

* A passion for improving outcomes for vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.
* Proven experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs and/or EBSA.
* A sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
* The ability to deliver creative, personalised learning and support.
* Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
* A collaborative, empathetic and proactive approach to working with families, colleagues, and external agencies.
* Confidence in managing behaviour through de-escalation techniques and positive support strategies.
* Familiarity with updating EHCPs, provision maps and using MIS systems is desirable.
