Job Overview

Job Description

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors. They’re responsible for 24% of UK Greenhouse Gas emissions. You’ll help decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production, balancing energy security with sustainable sources.

Through effective regulation, we ensure energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions and mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.

We are recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for someone with experience working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop sector strategy and produce tools to regulate, support development, and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations, and other key industry players.
* Remain available to respond to incidents and provide business continuity support during incidents.
* Lead on the definition of standards for energy sectors, providing strategic direction, tools, guidance, and training for new duties.

Required Experience and Skills

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage consideration of diversity issues.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, with experience regulating emissions controls for combustion and related processes.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies, and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

Competences

* Legislative Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements for energy sector regulations.
* Teamwork: Illustrate experience working with senior advisors on a wide portfolio of work.
* Relationship Management: Provide examples of managing relationships with varied stakeholders.

Contract Length

Up to 2 years.

Application Process

Applications will be blind assessed using answers to the competency questions. Feedback is not provided at the application stage.

Interview details: Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November.

Travel may be required.

This vacancy closes at the end of October.

Eligibility and Employment Notes

If you are applying from the Civil Service, the Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; you would not be a Crown Servant. Eligibility for continuous service depends on your current employer’s redundancy status. Contact your HR team if unsure.
