Job Summary
HMRCs Wealthy compliance teams (Wealthy) are responsible for the tax compliance of the UKs wealthiest individuals. Wealthy individuals often have complex tax affairs that present significant challenges to an effective tax administration. Given the size and nature of the tax at risk within the wealthy population it increases the opportunities and risks of non-compliance.
Our teams assure the tax paid by wealthy individuals and tackle risks and non-compliant behaviours to ensure that wealthy individuals contribute to the health of the tax system. This involves a strong, policy, technical and data led approach to promoting compliance and preventing non-compliance that encourages and supports the customer to get things right first time.
Our approach is tailored to the risk that is presented by our customers.
Job Description:
As a Tax Specialist - Finance Sector, you will play a key role in supporting the Wealthy Finance Sector by providing expert technical support to case teams handling Finance cases by acting as case director and providing expert technical support and leading on the more complex and technical matters while helping to build team capability.
Your workload will be varied, consisting of collaborating across technical research teams to support the risk assessment of potential cases, and working in partnership with the Finance Sector Lead to offer insights into sector-specific risks and commercial awareness.
You will represent the sector in cross-directorate, pipeline, and other technical, delivery, and governance forumspresenting at meetings and leading discussions as required.
Travel may be required from time to time to fulfil this role.
Person Specification (Responsibilities):
* Develop a comprehensive understanding of HMRCs operational risking strategy within the Finance sector, promoting best practices for identifying and managing sector-specific risks.
* Build in-depth knowledge of the sectors operational landscape, including key business cycles, structures, and behaviours, to inform risk assessment and compliance strategies.
* Lead the development and piloting of innovative compliance approaches, leveraging legislative powers, data, and intelligence. Collaborate with analytical teams to build a comprehensive understanding of sector risk.
* Engage with key stakeholders such as RIS, KAI, MSB, LB, and Assets to uncover new risk areas and explore opportunities for joint initiatives that enhance yield.
* Strengthen relationships with agents and intermediaries to drive upstream compliance and improve future yield outcomes.
* Enhance the technical expertise of case teams, coordinating work across related entities within the sector to ensure consistency and quality.
* Support strategic portfoliosincluding Policy, Evasion, and Avoidancewithin the Wealthy segment, fostering strong stakeholder relationships and contributing to broader compliance objective.
* Recent demonstrable experience advising on UK tax legislation within the finance sector (e.g. asset/fund management, investments).
* In-depth knowledge of finance sector-specific tax risks and commercial practices, with the ability to provide informed, strategic advice.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience influencing and engaging internal and external stakeholders.
* Demonstrated leadership in complex environments and a track record of developing and implementing effective tax compliance strategies.
* Ability to work at pace, manage shifting priorities, and meet challenging deadlines in a dynamic setting.
Qualifications:
This is a tax professional role. Applicants must have completed at least one of the following:
Chartered Accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA) qualification.
Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme, or one of its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2).
Be a qualified solicitor or barrister with post qualification experience in tax

Alongside your salary range of £56,344 - £62,590 (London: £63,397 - £70,422) - (Higher starting pay above the band minimum may be awarded dependent on assessment of experience).
HMRC operates both Flexible and Hybrid Working policies, allowing you to balance your work and personal commitments. We welcome applications from those who need to work a more flexible arrangement and will agree to requests where possible, considering our operational and customer service needs.
We offer a generous leave allowance, starting at 25 days and increasing by a day for every year of qualifying service up to a maximum of 30 days.
