Senior General Manager - Warehouse & Transport

Salary: £90,000 - £100,000 per annum

The Senior General Manager - Warehouse & Transport leads and oversees all operational aspects of warehousing and transport functions within a fast-paced logistics and supply chain environment. This role is responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe, and cost-effective management of warehouse facilities and transportation fleets, while driving continuous improvement and meeting customer service objectives. The position requires strategic leadership, operational expertise and stakeholder management to optimise the end-to-end distribution activities.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage all warehouse and transport operations to ensure timely and accurate delivery of goods in line with customer requirements and company standards.
* Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance service quality across warehousing and transport functions.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, transport legislation, and industry best practises within all operational activities.
* Oversee the management, development and performance of teams, promoting a positive culture focussed on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
* Manage budgets and control operational expenditure to meet financial targets.
* Collaborate with procurement, supply chain, and customer service teams to align operational activities with business objectives.
* Monitor key performance indicators and produce regular reports for senior leadership to inform decision-making.
* Lead projects related to process improvement, technology implementation and capacity planning within warehouse and transport operations.
* Manage relationships with external suppliers and transport partners, negotiating contracts and service level agreements.
* Drive sustainability initiatives and implement environmentally responsible practises within the logistics operations.
Required Qualifications
* A degree or equivalent qualification in logistics, supply chain management, business management or a related discipline.
* Demonstrable leadership experience in warehouse and transport management within the logistics or supply chain sector.
* Proven track record of managing large teams and complex operations effectively.
* Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and transport regulations applicable in the United Kingdom.
* Experience managing operational budgets and delivering cost efficiencies.
Education
* Bachelor's degree or higher in logistics, supply chain management, business administration or a closely related subject.
* Professional development courses relevant to warehouse and transport management are advantageous.
Experience
* At least ten years' experience within logistics, distribution, or supply chain environments, with a minimum of five years in a senior management role overseeing warehouse and transport operations.
* Experience in implementing operational improvements and managing change within complex organisations.
* Demonstrable experience in supplier and vendor management.
Knowledge and Skills
* Comprehensive understanding of warehouse management systems and transport management systems.
* Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop diverse teams.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
* Proficient communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
* Sound knowledge of supply chain principles and logistics best practises.
* Ability to work under pressure, managing competing priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
* Membership of a recognised professional body in logistics or supply chain management.
* Experience of working with sustainable logistics and environmental management standards.
* Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.
* Driving licence valid in the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions
* The role is based primarily at the company's DC in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
* Full-time hours are expected, with occasional requirements to work outside of standard office hours to meet operational needs.
* The position involves both office-based and warehouse floor presence, requiring adherence to safety protocols at all times.
* Travel to other company sites, supplier locations or partner facilities within the UK may be necessary.
