Project Title: Fault Prediction Using Geological–Geomechanical Forward Modelling
Location:
Minerva Crawley, UK
Minerva Crawley is where the Geomechanics Center of Excellence is located.
Description & Scope
This project aims to investigate whether coupled geological and geomechanical forward modelling can be used to enhance the prediction of sub-seismic faults. The approach integrates stratigraphic forward modelling with geomechanical deformation simulations to reconstruct the depositional and tectonic evolution. From these simulations, both stratigraphic attributes (e.g., facies and sedimentary architectures) and geomechanical attributes (e.g., strains and stresses) will be available.
The coupled forward modelling results will then be transformed into synthetic seismic to assess their predictive power in detecting -among other features- sub-seismic faults. The workflow may also incorporate a post-processing method to automatically identify or enhance potential fault plane geometries.
The Scope Of Work Includes
* Geological–Geomechanical Forward Modelling
* Construct a simplified yet geologically realistic stratigraphic forward model representing the depositional and tectonic history of the target reservoir.
* Run coupled or sequential simulations to generate deformation patterns and key geomechanical attributes (strain, stress, displacement, etc.) on the previously created stratigraphic forward model.
* Seismic Attribute Conversion and Fault Prediction
* Convert the coupled geological-geomechanical forward model(s) to synthetic seismic
* Sub seismic- and seismic-scale fault prediction and extraction
* Deliverables
* A final report summarizing feasibility, limitations, and recommendations for future development
Required Skills
* MSc student in Geology, Numerical Modelling, Rock Mechanics, Physics or a related discipline
* Oral and written communication skills in English
* Good motivation, autonomy, teamwork, and ingenuity
* Geology/Geoscience
* Numerical Modelling
* Geomechanics
* Rock Physics
