Design Manager

We are seeking an experienced Design Manager to join a Development team and play a key role in the successful delivery of a major capital investment programme. This is a high-profile role where you will oversee the full design lifecycle - from planning through to delivery - ensuring compliance, technical excellence, and smooth coordination across multiple stakeholders.
About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Development, the Design Manager will work closely with other senior leaders, project managers, and subject matter experts to establish and implement design processes based on the RIBA Plan of Work. You will ensure statutory duties are met under Building Safety and Health & Safety legislation, while driving consistency and quality in design outputs across the programme.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain design development processes, tools, forms, templates, and schedules.
Establish and maintain technical standards with stakeholders and subject matter experts.
Support Programme and Project Managers in ensuring design outputs meet Building Regulations, fire safety, and sustainability objectives.
Oversee compliance tracking, design risk management, change control, and approvals.
Ensure the "golden thread" of records and documentation is maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
Support procurement and assessment of third-party consultants and contractors.
Chair regular design process workshops with consultants and contractors.
Provide quality assurance, reporting, and challenge to business cases, ensuring risks, assumptions, and benefits are clearly articulated.
Support wider programme governance, ensuring records such as risk registers, issues logs, and lessons learned are maintained.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone with:
Practical knowledge of PAS8671:2022 Principal Designer requirements.
Demonstrable experience of design development across all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work.
Strong track record in design management, project controls, and governance within major projects.
Excellent understanding of change management, risk management, dependency mapping, and compliance tracking.
Proficiency in MS Office and project management tools, with strong reporting and presentation skills.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
A collaborative and proactive approach, with strong attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
