Overview

Market Service Officer role at London Borough of Hackney. 29 hours per week (every Saturday and two Sundays per month). Salary £34,359–£35,893 (pro rata). Keep Hackney’s markets growing by ensuring stalls operate safely and effectively in a diverse and vibrant borough setting.


Role

You will be the first point of contact for traders and customers, delivering high-quality service with a calm and confident approach. The role involves being on the market for about 80% of the trading day, monitoring activities, checking licenses, and ensuring adherence to regulations.

* Responsibilities
* Support traders with stall setup and breakdown and build positive relationships with license holders.
* Carry out regular checks on stall sizes, commodities, and licenses; advise traders on responsibilities and report breaches to support enforcement action.
* Support income-generating activities and identify new trading opportunities and businesses.
* Maintain standards by reporting defects, ensuring market cleanliness, and managing public highway obstructions.
* Engage with the community, respond to inquiries and complaints, and foster strong public relations.
* Handle daily administrative tasks, processing payments, and support debt recovery.

Working pattern: This role requires a varied shift pattern, including mandatory weekend working (every Saturday and/or Sunday) and occasional late nights and public holidays.

* Physically capable of outdoor work in all weather; able to walk or stand for most of the day. Some manual handling may be required.
* Technologically savvy; competent with IT, especially Microsoft Office.
* Committed to public service; understand relevant market and street trading legislation.
