Job Summary
SHOT is the UK‘s professional haemovigilance organisation which collects adverse incident reports relating to transfusion from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. SHOT works closely with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Competent Authority (CA) for implementation of the UK Blood Safety and Quality Regulations .
The SHOT Clinical Incidents Specialist will work under the direction of the SHOT Operations Manager on the detailed analysis, interpretation and reporting of clinical based SHOT data. The primary role of the Clinical Incidents Specialist will be to produce reports, presentations, manuscripts, surveys and studies on behalf of SHOT for the annual report, peer reviewed journals, symposia and for other publications and presentations as required. Relevant clinical experience in an acute hospital, community or public health setting will be required for this post. To achieve this, you will have considerable recent clinical experience in an acute hospital setting of blood transfusion practice, with a good current knowledge of scientific and clinical practice, investigation of adverse incidents and implementation of improvement actions.
Main duties of the job
Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) is the UK’s professionally-led haemovigilance scheme.You will be responsible for:
1. Detailed analysis, interpretation and reporting of clinical based SHOT data.
2. Produce reports, presentations, manuscripts, surveys and studies on behalf of SHOT for the Annual SHOT Report, peer reviewed journals, symposia and for other publications and presentations as required.
3. Represent SHOT at relevant meetings and make presentations of clinical data and studies.
4. Take a leading role in the development and review of SHOT Transfusion Safety Standards, required actions and changes in clinical practice based on data findings, collaborating with external professional and regulatory bodies regarding this.
5. Take a leading role, on behalf of SHOT, in ongoing national initiatives, for example National Comparative Audit (when relevant), liaising with relevant clinical experts, answering queries from haemovigilance reporters.
6. Teaching on the NMA (Non-Medical Authorisation) course and being part of the working group., Support the SHOT team at other courses and events such as the Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) in transfusion course, etc.
7. Initiate the development of teaching material suitable for the various groups of healthcare professionals based around SHOT clinical data, and decide upon suitable methods of delivery.
You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
8. Substantial relevant clinical experience in an acute hospital, community or public health setting.
9. Experience of risk and/or error management
10. Experience of clinical or scientific study and audit – design and execution
11. Experience of writing, speaking and presenting data and preparation of the materials required
12. Experience of developing hypotheses and writing proposals for studies
13. Knowledge of clinical governance and healthcare quality issues
14. Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Qualifications and Training
15. Degree in nursing, biomedical or social science OR equivalent professional qualification
16. Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration OR registered with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
17. Recognised higher nursing or biomedical science qualification in blood transfusion OR evidence of continuing professional development showing breadth and depth equivalent to a higher qualification – equivalent to Masters Level.
18. Teaching and/or presentation training to Train the Trainer level.
19. Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
