About the Role
Trainee Degree Engineering Officer Cadet - Merchant Navy
As an Engineering Cadet, you will learn the skills, knowledge, and behaviours over a 3-year adventure to become a fully trained Officer of the Watch with internationally recognised qualifications. James Fisher and Sons will sponsor your training journey by paying for your exam and course fees, including accommodation at college, as well as providing a bursary allowance of £8,500 in Year 1 increasing to £10,500 in Year 2/3.
Engineer Cadet Officers oversee operating and maintaining the ship's engine room and its equipment, including the main engine, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, electrical generating and distribution equipment, refrigeration and air conditioning plants, lifts, cranes, and all other mechanical and electrical systems.
As part of your studies, your training programme lasts about 3 years, structured in phases. Each phase tends to last up to 6 months.
You will typically spend Phase 1, 3 and 5 of your training programmes at Fleetwood Nautical College. If you do not live near the college, accommodation and meals are provided in dedicated cadet accommodation, and travel to and from college is covered at the start and end of term. The college site is: Fleetwood Nautical College (website information available by request).
Phases 2 and 4 are spent at sea onboard our tankers. Each voyage typically lasts about 2 months, with a designated mentor onboard, and full PPE provided. Our fleet trades along the UK and Northern European coastline, and also operates in the Caribbean. We fully pay for travel to and from vessels and all meals during sea phases. See our tanker fleet for reference.
What qualifications will I get?
Graduates receive Deck Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (II/1 EOOW), enabling work as a qualified Deck Officer on any vessel. Training onboard an oil tanker also provides a specialised qualification for tanker operations to support future career options.
You will work towards and achieve a BEng in Marine Engineering with Fleetwood College as part of your Cadetship programme.
