We are seeking a skilled and experienced Phlebotomist to join our two surgery teams for five mornings per week, working across two sites: Marden Medical Centre (2 mornings) and Yalding Surgery (3 mornings). Previous experience in a GP surgery would be an advantage but not essential.
Main duties of the job
Working as part of our multidisciplinary team, the post‑holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture and collecting blood samples from patients in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner.
In addition, the successful candidate may be asked to carry out basic health checks (e.g., height and weight measurements). There will also be opportunities for further training and development, with potential progression into either a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) or General Practice Assistant (GPA) role.
Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks depending on workload and staffing levels:
* Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
* Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
* Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensuring specimens are ready for onward transportation
* Correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
* Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
* Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
* Maintaining effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff
* Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient‑related matters
* Being an integral part of the general practice team
* Acting as a chaperone as required
* Ensuring clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation's IPC policy
* Working within national and local protocols where these exist
* Being aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhering to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children
* Supporting the administrative team on an as‑required basis
* Undertaking all mandatory training and induction programmes
* Contributing to and embracing the spectrum of clinical governance
* Maintaining a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
* Attending a formal appraisal with the manager at least every 12 months; once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed regularly to set new objectives
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist has the following wider responsibilities:
* Participating in audits as directed
* Participating in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
* Supporting and participating in shared learning
* Completing opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of working with the general public
* Experience of working in a healthcare setting
* Has worked in a primary care environment
Qualifications
* Good standard of general education
* Proof of any courses or training qualifications commensurate with the post
* Able to perform venepuncture
* Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to colleagues
* Clinical IT system user skills and ability to record accurate clinical notes
* Understanding of infection prevention and control measures

Salary
£13 to £15 an hour (pay will be dependent on experience).
