We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the 422, Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford, United Kingdom.

What will be your primary role?

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support) assigned to a crew engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations. The successful applicant will drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting vehicles. They will respond to the presence, or potential releases of, hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling their release and perform noninvasive emergency medical procedures. They will perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. In the course of these duties, they will perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multi-storied buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. All duties will be performed in accordance with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures, in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

You are required to be certified by the Department of Defense Firefighter Certification System as Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper, Apparatus Driver Operator – Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Apparatus Driver Operator- Aerial*, Apparatus Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS).

*NOTE- Required only if Aerial and MWS is assigned.

What are the Key Skills required for this role?

1. Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water-flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.

2. Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.

3. Knowledge of HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.

4. Knowledge of basic life support techniques and protocols; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.

5. Skill in operating communications equipment.

6. Ability to apply basic life support techniques and protocols; conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis; maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads.

What are the conditions of employment for this role?

1. Duties are performed at RAF Croughton and RAF Fairford, as scheduled. This position may also be coded as mission essential.

2. You will be required to pass both a pre-employment and annual Firefighters physicals for the mandatory physical fitness program and are required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.

3. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, UK valid driver's license (Category C) is required for the position.

4. You may be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).

5. You may be required to maintain current National Registry Emergency Medical Technical-Basic (EMT-B) certification.

6. This position may be considered operational; when working an operational work schedule the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE shift pattern. The shift pattern may total 192 hours over a 4-week period. Work schedules may be subject to change depending on the operational needs of the organization as dictated by management, start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with the organization's flexible working policies.

7. Special Retirement Provisions Authority: This is a Primary operations position; UK retirement rules apply; (60 for Primary Firefighters).

8. Employee must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.

9. You may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.

10. The Local National Direct Hire (LNDH) Program does not participate in regular drug testing, however positions covered by this document may be subject to drug testing upon reasonable suspicion of substance abuse, and safety mishap or accident testing.

11. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.

12. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations and may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training.
