Paediatric Dietitian – Band 6
Deliver specialist community‑based dietetic services to children and families across Wiltshire. Manage your own caseload, plan and monitor nutritional interventions, and work collaboratively with GPs, Health Visitors, Children’s Services and multidisciplinary teams. The role can be based at Wilton Community Hospital or Chippenham Community Hospital, with hybrid working and access to both sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Safely and effectively manage your own patient caseload.
* Carry out comprehensive nutritional assessments including anthropometric measurements and use specialist equipment where needed.
* Calculate and estimate individual nutritional requirements.
* Develop safe and appropriate nutritional treatment plans tailored to each patient.
* Work with patients and families to agree on and implement the recommended dietary treatment.
* Monitor progress closely and adjust treatment plans as required.
* Review, discharge or hand over patients in line with local procedures and clinical pathways.
* Arrange follow‑up appointments in accordance with service guidelines.
* Identify, assess and manage risks involved in clinical decision‑making.
* Adhere to all departmental, Trust‑wide and professional guidelines.
* Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date patient records in line with national and local standards, including BDA guidance.
* Critically evaluate new developments in dietetic practice and share relevant insights with colleagues and line managers.
* Provide detailed clinical information for legal purposes when required.
* Communicate sensitive or complex information to patients, sometimes in challenging or emotionally difficult situations.
* Use strong negotiation and motivational skills to support diet and lifestyle changes.
* Provide education, guidance and therapeutic dietary advice, developing supporting materials.
* Ensure patient understanding using a range of communication techniques.
* Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues at all levels.
* Translate clinical nutritional concepts into practical, accessible guidance.
Qualifications and Experience
* Current HCPC registration as a Dietitian.
* Degree in Dietetics, Human Nutrition or equivalent.
* Membership of the British Dietetic Association and its Paediatric Specialist Group.
* Strong specialist knowledge of paediatric nutrition and evidence‑based dietetic practice across a range of conditions.
* Post‑registration training in communication and behaviour change, with completed Safeguarding Children training.
* Experience working with paediatric patients in NHS settings, including paediatric home enteral feeding.
* Experience in project management, teaching and supervising staff or students.
* Ability to translate complex dietetic information into clear, practical language for children, carers and professionals.
* Knowledge of clinical governance, standard paediatric dietetic products and safe treatment planning.
* Strong communication skills for 1:1 and group education, with a sensitive and supportive approach.
* Ability to work autonomously as a paediatric specialist within multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to design, deliver and evaluate training programmes and set up audits to monitor service quality.
* Flexible, innovative approach with strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
* Car driver with access to a vehicle for business use.
* Willingness to work flexibly across different areas of the county or Trust when required.
Additional Essential Criteria for Band 6
* Completion of BDA Paediatric Dietetic Modules 1 and 2.
* Training in supervisory skills.
* Additional BDA paediatric modules or working towards a relevant MSc.
