Senior Therapeutic Radiographer – Proton Beam Therapy
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensure that the highly complex radiotherapy and imaging equipment is safe and accurate to operate, undertaking appropriate machine checks and reporting variances, faults, and malfunctions.
2. Undertake and evaluate radiation dose delivery and complex calculations involving various radiation types and energies.
3. Interpret, monitor, and evaluate treatment prescriptions to ensure accurate and reproducible radiotherapy delivery in accordance with the quality system.
4. Evaluate radiotherapy delivery through treatment verification procedures.
5. Follow systems and working methods to achieve safe, timely workload targets.
6. Accurately position patients and operate complex radiotherapy and imaging equipment along the treatment pathway.
7. Maintain accurate records and comply with policies and procedures.
8. Analyze patient data systematically, ensuring dignity and respect for patients and relatives.
9. Communicate confidential information and provide emotional support to patients and carers, including children and terminally ill patients.
10. Provide information regarding the radiotherapy pathway and potential side effects to patients and carers.
11. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, manage conflicts, and escalate issues as necessary.
12. Identify and manage treatment-related side effects, referring to relevant healthcare professionals when needed.
13. Maintain patient confidentiality and apply information governance legislation.
14. Implement safe moving and handling practices and abide by health and safety legislation.
15. Minimize cross-infection risks according to infection control policies.
16. Contribute to quality management system development by reviewing and writing work instructions and procedures.
17. Ensure compliance with local rules and UK regulations (IRR 1999 and IR(ME)R 2017).
18. Participate in audits, research, and implementation of new techniques and processes.
19. Undertake training to dispense medication under PGD.
20. Participate in extended shifts, including bank holidays, weekends, and on-call duties.
21. Perform other duties as negotiated to develop the role.
22. Achieve all competencies outlined by the radiotherapy education team within specified timelines.
Supervisory & managerial responsibilities
1. Lead, coordinate, supervise, and manage radiotherapy staff, making assessments and key workload and patient care decisions.
Teaching and training
1. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff and serve as a role model.
2. Participate in personal development reviews and attend training and updates.
3. Assess new techniques and ideas for their value.
4. Supervise and train students and new staff members.
5. Report performance issues to line management with evidence as needed.
