Home Office Digital, Data and Technology designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.

Migration and Borders Technology Portfolio (MBTP) is part of the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Directorate in the Home Office. MBTP is a Portfolio of around 3,500 dedicated professionals made up of civil servants and suppliers working together to develop some of the most challenging and transformative technology products, supporting critical programmes within the Migration and Borders system. Working closely with colleagues in the Migration and Borders mission, we also support a number of the Home Office's capabilities such as Customer Services, Immigration Enforcement and Border Force. We jointly design services, build, run and sustain them to enable some of the government's most important strategic outcomes, notably the legitimate movement of people and goods to support economic prosperity.


Job description


This role is within MBTP's Technology Portfolio Management Team (TPM). TPM provide services and background functions to support delivery across MBTP and is split into two parts: a PMO function and BMT. MBTP is the largest entity within DDaT.

BMT provide a variety of functions for MBTP including the following sub team strands: Workforce Planning, Contract and SOW management, Joiners, Movers and Leavers, Strategic Data and People. The role will report directly to the Strategic Data Lead within BMT.

About The Role

* As Senior Business Manager your role will be responsible for leading the provision of business support activity. You will be able to work collaboratively with your team and Senior Managers to support the business, typically include engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
* You will be someone who is able to guide, influence and persuade peers and managers and work independently in your work area, using your knowledge and management experience to deliver business management and management information. Using your process and business knowledge with your analytical skills to provide authoritative advice and solutions.
* Working with, developing and maintaining VBA Macro Enabled workbooks will be a key activity. Supporting and training Delivery managers on using the finance Project/Product tracking tools and well further developing and refining the tools and VBA code. Producing well commented code and user guidance will feature.
* Further work across the strands will include development of better automated tools to support BMT teams and find efficiencies and improve processes. Each strand operates with different data sources and you will identify how the data can be utilised to help the team manage and monitor its workflow internally and report outwardly.
* Analysing large and complex workforce data sets to provide insight and trend information. Automating production processes and manipulations.
* Responding to a variety of ad hoc requests for data. Being able to quickly identify the requirements of the request and formulate the best way to respond based on the data available to you.
* Developing dashboards and data visualisations to enable self-service access of data sets where appropriate. As well as being open to innovating with technology and work methods to improve our current ability to carry out reporting.

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working with multiple source datasets with strong to expert Excel skills with expert knowledge of VBA to automate excel processes and edit/improve existing code, as well other MS Apps. A proven ability to quickly grasp processes and identify issues, ways to improve and be able to implement change. Communicating and explaining the issues and improvements to less technically minded colleagues will also be critical. Ability to self-managing and work independently operate will also factor as the role is an individual working across multiple strands/teams rather than within a specific single team.

* Demonstrating effective data management and analysis skills using the most appropriate techniques and presentation. Experience of using MS Excel at an Advanced level
* Demonstrating effective engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Describing the range of stakeholders and their interests to use the best approach to engagement.
* Being able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a broad range of colleagues, managers, stakeholders and external partners. Possessing a knowledge of different communication methods and strategies to target different audiences
* Good project delivery experience as well as the ability to engage with stakeholders in dynamic environment will be vital, with an everchanging list of priorities and demands.
* A focus on delivering under pressure and being able to adapt are required


Person specification


Essential criteria

* Strong to expert Excel skills including visualisations.
* Expert VBA skills for MS Excel and other MS Apps to automate processes and production.
* A track record in providing evidence-based analysis and support for decision making and the drive to improve operational performance.
* Experience of using reporting systems to develop, create and deliver interactive MI and cohesive Dashboards.
* An ability to provide insightful analysis on complex issues and communicate this effectively to a variety of audiences.
* Evidence of delivering at pace under challenging circumstances.
* An ability to inspire, motivate and engage teams to deliver high performance and build capability.

Desirable criteria

* A strong understanding and experience of UK Borders, Immigration and Citizenship landscape.
* Good understanding of the different Project Delivery stages.
