The role
As a Senior Plant Engineer, you’ll take on a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be at the heart of managing submarine docks, nuclear fuel handling and radioactive waste facilities - critical to supporting the Ministry of Defence’s nuclear submarine programme. Your work will ensure safe and compliant facilities for maintenance, upkeep and disposal activities, making a real difference to national security and shaping the future of defence engineering.
Day-to-day, you’ll be part of the team managing our nuclear and radiological facilities, with responsibilities including:
1. Implementing nuclear safety case requirements to operate docks and associated facilities.
2. Enabling safe delivery of work packages, ensuring controls are in place for nuclear safety evolutions.
3. Overseeing control of work, site operations, and plant maintenance.
4. Supporting projects in the design and installation of new engineering and infrastructure.
5. Liaising with operational teams, conducting health and safety walkdowns, and resolving facility defects.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 3 days in the office/onsite and 2 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Senior Plant Engineer
6. Experience managing work in high-hazard or regulated industries (e.g. nuclear, chemical, oil & gas, rail, or aerospace).
7. Skilled in implementing risk assessments or safety cases.
8. Strong team and stakeholder management skills.
9. Proven ability to oversee complex engineering operations.
Qualifications for the Senior Plant Engineer
10. Level 5 qualification essential or equivalent higher-level learning with substantial experience.
11. Level 6 STEM degree preferred.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
