Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, full time Band 3 Healthcare Assistant. The candidate should have at least 1 year of experience in a hospital environment dealing with the general public. You need to be flexible and able to rotate shifts to cover days, nights and weekends. This is a great opportunity for Care Assistants to take more responsibility in the stroke rehab environment at Wexham Park Hospital.
Unit
The stroke rehab unit is a 25-bed busy unit looking after patients with various medical conditions, mainly stroke rehab patients. You will be working with the nursing and multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality patient care to patients and relatives.
Responsibilities
* Support the nursing staff by ensuring all documentation is up to date.
* Provide care for dementia and acute care needs as part of daily duties.
* Report any changes in a patient’s condition and maintain a safe area.
* Provide professional, competent basic nursing care to patients and relatives without direct supervision.
* Undertake basic, agreed clinical activities without direct supervision.
* Prioritise own workload and make independent minor decisions.
* Assist in discharge planning and support patients with hygiene while maintaining dignity.
* Promote good hand washing and work with infection control policies.
* Accurately record patient observations and report findings to the named nurse.
* Process blood samples through POC machines and ensure blood results are signed by medical staff.
* Assist with venepuncture and cannulation duties following training and competency.
* Provide basic wound care after training, including aseptic technique and wound swab collection.
* Apply Plaster of Paris under supervision after training and competency evidence.
* Assist with ECG recording and reporting following doctor interpretation.
* Support bereavement care following training.
* Be a role model to junior staff and learners in the emergency department environment after training.
* Collaborate with all MDT members and promote good working relationships with police, ambulance, OT, physiotherapists, doctors, nurses, and social services.
* Raise safeguarding issues to the nurse in charge and adhere to health and safety regulations.
* Participate in ongoing development and update training to meet post demands; adhere to PREP recommendations.
* Ensure effective communication to promote smooth transitions between specialty units/wards and safely escort patients between care environments.
* Produce clear and factual documentation to standards of the Record Keeping Act; demonstrate excellent telephone communication and messenger skills.
* COVID swab patients at the earliest opportunity where applicable.
Essential qualifications and skills
* Experience in a hospital setting dealing with the general public (minimum 1 year).
* Flexible and able to rotate shifts to cover days, nights and weekends.
* Dementia care and acute care skills.
* Venepuncture, cannulation and catheterization (essential); EPIC familiarity desirable.
* Ability to mentor new staff members (Care Assistants).
