Please note that this vacancy may be withdrawn at any time should it be filled via the internal redeployment process Job Overview A vacancy has arisen in the Blood Sciences department of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (band 5) to join our Biochemistry team. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work. The successful post holder will need to be able to rotate across all sites in ABUHB, this includes the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny and the new Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran. The 24/7 service is provided at the Grange University Hospital. The laboratories at all sites of ABUHB are equipped with the new Siemens Atellica automation. The Siemens solution was put into operation mid-July 2021 across all sites. Most of the sample processing is completed at the Grange University Hospital which includes both critical and routine samples. We process approximately 5000 samples a day across ABUHB (approximate 4000 samples in GUH). The busy Special Chemistry department, based at the Grange University Hospital, provides a wide repertoire of specialist investigations. Main duties of the job PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM STAFF CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY ANEURIN BEVAN UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD The post is a part time permanent role, covering 29 hours over a 7-day working week and will be mainly based at the Grange University Hospital. Participation in the out of hours service will be an essential requirement, once deemed competent in all relevant areas. The OOH service is provided over 24/7, 365 days with a shift pattern derived through e-roster. You will be HCPC registered and have experience working in a NHS laboratory. You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to CPD, have excellent interpersonal and time-management skills, be committed to service excellence and be keen on supporting development of Pathology services within Southeast Wales. The department would consider an individual with sufficient NHS laboratory experience who is working towards their HCPC registration for a trainee post to be completed within two years from the start of this appointment. Please note that the salary for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist will be as per AFC Annex 21. Qualifications/Knowledge Essential criteria Biomedical Science degree or equivalent Registration with HCPC Evidence of CPD Basic and specialist knowledge of Biochemistry Knowledge of Quality control and Assurance Understanding of Health and Safety Generic laboratory knowledge acquired during the registration process Desirable criteria Experience within a Biochemistry department Willingness to work towards a higher qualification Experience Essential criteria Experience of automated and manual laboratory investigations and procedures (sufficient pre-registration training). Able to work autonomously General familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft office). Desirable criteria Additional experience of IT including electronic reporting, requesting and data storage, search, retrieval and enquiry. Experience of using Laboratory information system. Skills and Attributes Essential criteria Effective written and verbal communication skills. Basic technical operations of the department. Ability to work without supervision and as part of a team and under pressure Ability to assess priorities Good attention to detail Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team Aptitude for using complex equipment/ manual processes with a high degree of manual dexterity Punctual and reliable Desirable criteria Experience of working with a networked pathology computer system Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Accreditation requirements. Knowledge of quality management systems Other Essential criteria Ability to travel to other sites in a timely manner Flexible approach to needs of the service Contractual obligation to work 24/7 shift pattern
